Jadon Sancho has been blasted as Manchester United's "worst ever signing" by fans, while Old Trafford icon Paul Scholes has questioned his "weird" move to Aston Villa this summer.

The 25-year-old has struggled to adapt to Premier League football since his £73million transfer from Borussia Dortmund four years ago.

His move to Old Trafford ended a year-long pursuit from then-boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, after the club failed to strike a deal with the German giants in 2020.

The English international has scored 53 goals in 158 Dortmund appearances - including his second spell on loan from the Red Devils - but his United career never took off.

The winger scored just 12 goals in red, and has now embarked on his third loan spell in four years, this time to Unai Emery's Villa.

Last season, Sancho spent the campaign at Chelsea, where he scored five times including a stunning effort in the Conference League final as he helped the Blues lift the title.

But Enzo Maresca's side decided to pay a £5m penalty to avoid signing the former Dortmund man due to his excessive wage demands, paying to send him back to Old Trafford instead and leaving him in Ruben Amorim's famed "bomb squad" of players that were not in his plans.

And it is this disappointing run of form that has led fans to believe that Sancho is United's "worst ever signing", as one supporter outlined on the Overlap with Jamie Carragher and Paul Scholes.

"I don't know if it's a hot take about this season but Jadon Sancho is the worst signing Manchester United have ever made - and there's big competition," a supporter remarked to the former England internationals.

Over recent years, signings such as Antony, Angel Di Maria and Rasmus Hojlund all rank in United's top-10 most expensive signings, while none of them ever really impressed. It is Sancho, though, who has been deemed the worst of all.

"It's funny with Jadon Sancho," Carragher replied. "Back when he was at Borussia Dortmund, Gary Neville and I were on a show where we had to pick an England squad.

"We hadn't seen too much of him – he was doing well in the Champions League, but we left him out. Everyone on social media was saying, 'How can you not pick Sancho?'

"I'm still not sure there's that much ability there. He's okay, but I don't really see what his standout quality is.

"With Marcus Rashford, even though I've criticised him, I can picture his pace, his shooting, his free-kicks, the power he puts into the ball.

"With Sancho, I just don't know what his thing is – I can't picture it in my head."

The former Liverpool defender added he has "never seen" Sancho's ability to dribble out of tight spaces, as suggested by a fan.

Scholes felt his latest loan move to Villa Park was strange, saying: "Unai Emery might be good for him, but it is a weird signing.

"We talked about the size of pitch might be an issue for him - Villa Park is massive. A lack of pace, a lack of legs, it concerns you.

"He has got ability, but what is his strength? Does he cut inside and smash it in the top corner? Can he beat a man? He possibly links with a centre forward.

"[Turning back after beating defenders] is a pace issue. He probably has the skill to go past someone, but they catch him. He can’t go on again."
