The ex-Three Lions ace thanked supporters after being rushed for treatment near his Dorset home

Former England star Paul Gascoigne has been rushed to hospital after being found "semi-conscious" at home.

Gascoigne, 58, was said to have been found in his Dorset bedroom by a friend before being admitted to intensive care.

The ex-Spurs, Rangers and Lazio hero was later moved to an acute medical unit in a "stable condition", The Sun revealed on Sunday.

Steve Foster, his driver and personal assistant who found him, said the Italia '90 icon would "like to thank everyone for the support he's received so far from so many old friends who wish him well and want to see him back to his best".

"Paul is in hospital, which is the best possible place for him to be right now," Foster added.

The 58-year-old is now expected to remain under medical supervision at Poole Hospital for "several days".

The ex-England icon's health scare on Saturday comes just weeks after he revealed his fortunes had taken a major turn for the better.

Speaking to The Mirror ahead of the release of his autobiography, "Eight", Gascoigne said: "I feel better now than I have in years.

"I hope I am at a point that I can look back over everything I've gone through with a different, more positive, perspective."

Gascoigne was capped 57 times by England between 1988 and 1998 - and represented Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers, Middlesbrough and Everton during his distinguished career.

But after his 2004 retirement, the mercurial playmaker endured years of struggles with alcohol addiction and mental health problems.

Gascoigne's battles brought an end to his coaching career - and he has not worked in football since being dismissed as Kettering Town manager in 2005.

Gazza has not worked in football since being dismissed as Kettering Town manager in 2005

English fans still look fondly on his unforgettable finish against Scotland at Euro '96 - though those on the receiving end appeared bruised by the goal 25 years on.

Speaking to the BBC in 2021, ex-Tartan Army boss Craig Brown, reflecting on the crunch Wembley tie, said: "Don Howe and Terry Venables were in discussion and it was Gazza's number they were getting ready.

"I looked at my colleague Alex Miller and said: 'Thank goodness for that!'"

Midfielder Stuart McCall added: "A minute later, he does what only Gazza could do and scores a world-class goal. It's an iconic goal that can only be scored by a brilliant player."
