The Brazilian legend captained his boyhood club to a humbling defeat on the weekend

Neymar has revealed a touching message he received from his son after he was on the wrong end of a 6-0 hammering on Sunday evening while playing for boyhood club Santos.

The Brazilian star has moved back to his native Brazil to play for Santos, the club he began his esteemed career with, as he eyes a return to the Brazilian national team for the 2026 World Cup.

Sunday, though, marked the lowest point of his return to Brazil and his career, as he suffered a 6-0 hammering at the hands of Vasco da Gama, led by none other than Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho, who moved to Barcelona for an astonishing £142million after Neymar left the club to join PSG in a world-record £198million deal, scored twice as he put Neymar’s Santos to the sword.

After the game, Neymar could be seen in tears and said he was “ashamed” of his side’s performance.

“I’m ashamed. I’m totally disappointed with our performance,” the Brazilian icon said after he captained his side to the wounding defeat.

In a heartfelt message, Neymar’s son, 13-year-old Davi Lucca, reached out to the winger to send his thoughts and offered his support.

“Good evening, Dad,” Lucca wrote. “I know today has been a difficult day for you and for us, but I wanted you to know that in these difficult moments, and when no one is by your side, know that I will always be there for you.

“You are more than a great father, you are an idol, you are my inspiration, and even when you cry, I want you to know that I love you very much.

“Always keep that in mind. Now, I want you to hold your head high and reach out to them as you always have and will. You are incredible. I love you with all my heart.”

Posting on his Instagram story, Neymar replied to the emotional message: “I love you, my little one. Dad will get back on his feet.”

After the disappointing result at the weekend, Santos sacked head coach Cleber Xavier, with the club just two points above the relegation zone.

A historic club within Brazil, Santos were relegated for the first time in their history in 2023 but last year secured promotion back to the top division. They are now in real danger of falling straight back down.

After the match, Neymar responded apologising to the fans: “The fans have every right to protest, obviously, without using violence. But if they want to curse and insult, they're in their right.

“It's a feeling of extreme shame. I've never experienced this in my life. Unfortunately, it happened.

“The tears were from anger, from everything. Unfortunately, I can't help in every way. Anyway, it was total s**t, that's the reality.

“You have to explain our attitude on the field. Which, to sum it all up, was terrible," Neymar added to Brazilian media.

"It's a shame to play like that wearing the Santos jersey. I think everyone today needs to lay their head on their pillow, go home, and think about what they want to do.

"Because with today's attitude, if we have to do what we did today on the field, I don't think we even need to show up on Wednesday."
