Supporters watching the match from home were left angry

Football fans were left angry as many were unable to tell the teams part during the Premier League match between Newcastle and Tottenham on Saturday.

Viewers of the game questioned why Spurs were allowed to wear their grey third shirt for the game, which was difficult to differentiate from the hosts' jersey.

Newcastle donned their famous black and white stripes for the match at St James' Park, with black shorts and white socks.

Spurs were unable to wear their white home shirt as it would be too close to their opponents' attire.

The north Londoners have a dark blue away shirt, which was again clearly deemed too close to Newcastle's stripe.

So it was decided that Ange Postecoglou's side would wear their third kit.

The shirt is grey with a black stripe down either side, with the same pattern and colour on the shorts, with plain grey socks.

And many fans were left struggling to tell the difference between the two teams when watching on TV.

One X user wrote: "Shocking kit clash in Newcastle vs Spurs. Someone should be sacked for this."

Another posted: "Don’t know if I’m being dumb but this is a kit clash I think."

A third wrote: "Horrible kit clash at Newcastle. Spurs should have a yellow kit somewhere for this game."

While a fourth put: "Bad kit clash in the Newcastle - Tottenham game they look identical on the tele."

One fan joked that referees chief Howard Webb would apologise for the kit choice.

The X user wrote: "Will Howard Webb have to apologise for allowing this horrendous kit clash?"

Others aimed their criticism at the Premier League for allowing such a clash.

One wrote: "Supposed to be the biggest and best league in the world and yet they consistently allow teams to wear kits that clash with the opposition. Spurs away kit is way too close to Newcastle."
