Newcastle United look set to miss out on another top transfer target, as Manchester United are now ready to make a formal bid for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško.
The Bundesliga side are said to be looking for a fee in the region of £69million for the 22-year-old, who joined from sister club RB Salzburg for £20million two years ago.
The decision is now said to be up to the Slovenian international, who has a gentlemen’s agreement with Leipzig that should an acceptable offer be presented, he would be allowed to leave.
Both Newcastle and United have met his financial demands and are willing to come to an agreement on Leipzig’s asking price.
Manchester United and Newcastle are both keen on Benjamin Šeško
| PANews of Manchester United's intent to move for the forward has been confirmed by reputable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Slovenian striker has been in high demand over the past six months, after scoring 27 Bundesliga goals in two seasons.
The 22-year-old scored 21 goals in all competitions this season for an under-performing Leipzig side.
Arsenal had a strong interest in the forward from January, but opted for Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyökeres instead, with the Swedish striker joining on an initial £55million deal.

Alexander Isak has informed the club of his desire to leave and join Liverpool, with personal terms already agreed
| GettyNewcastle have had a longstanding interest in Šeško even before his move to the Bundesliga in 2023, where they chose to move for Alexsander Isak instead.
Now, with Isak forcing a move out of the club - he is said to be training alone at former side Real Sociedad after refusing to join up with Eddie Howe’s squad on their pre-season tour of Singapore - Newcastle have ignited their interest once more in Šeško.
However, Manchester United have stormed to the front of the queue for the striker’s services, informing Leipzig of their intent to table a formal offer should the Slovenian choose them.
It is the same old story for the Magpies this summer, who are having a nothing short of a nightmare.

Howe’s side have missed out on numerous targets to rival clubs, such as James Trafford, who joined Manchester City, and Bryan Mbeumo, who joined Manchester United.
Howe’s original plan was to have Isak playing alongside Hugo Ekitike at St. James’ Park, but it now looks as though this will be the case at Anfield instead, with the club also set to miss out on their back-up target in Šeško.
Newcastle did, however, get Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest last month in a £55million deal, adding further pace and directness to their attack.

The Magpies may have to consider further targets if they are to bolster their forward line, particularly with star striker Isak looking likely to leave the club before the end of the window.
Liverpool are said to be ready to pay a British-record £120million fee for the Swede’s services, but this is still some way short of Newcastle’s £150million valuation.
Arne Slot's side are said to have already agreed personal terms with the forward.
The traditional ‘top six’ have had no problems attracting top talent, with even Manchester United, despite their woeful campaign last year and lack of European football, spending significant sums of money to bolster their squads.
After Benjamin Šeško, completing a new-look front three for Ruben Amorim, United will look towards PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The Italian won the Champions League with the Parisians last year, and the Euros with Italy in 2021, bringing proven title-winning pedigree to Old Trafford.
Both additions could set Amorim off to a good start to start his revolution, as he looks to improve on their vastly disappointing campaign last year.
