Former Premier League star Faustino Asprilla was renowned for his maverick style on the pitch

Former Newcastle United striker Faustino Asprilla has carved out an unlikely second career as a successful condom entrepreneur, launching his flavoured contraceptive business in 2016.

The 52-year-old Colombian, who dazzled Premier League crowds during his two-and-a-half-year spell at St James' Park in the 1990s, has transformed from football maverick to businessman.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Asprilla expressed satisfaction with his post-football ventures.

"How am I doing nowadays? I'm excellent," he said, revealing he now operates a sugar cane farm alongside his contraceptive enterprise.

The former striker's business acumen became particularly evident during the coronavirus pandemic when he disclosed having 3.5 million condoms in stock.

This stockpile helped address a reported global shortage at the beginning of 2020.

The business, marketed under the "Tino" brand, has an unusual origin story dating back to 1993.

The venture was inspired by an incident during a Colombia match when a photograph of Asprilla accidentally exposing himself made international headlines.

This unexpected moment of notoriety eventually led to his decision to enter the contraceptive market.

"I have a farm, I sell sugar cane to the Colombian government and through an advertising campaign I sell condoms," Asprilla explained, highlighting the diverse nature of his business portfolio.

Asprilla's approach to life remains as unconventional as his playing style once was.

"You know, sex has always been important to me. I am Asprilla: lots of sex, no rules and pure life," he told the Italian newspaper.

This philosophy extends beyond his personal life into his business approach.

"Football for me has always been fun. No rules, no schemes," he explained, suggesting his free-spirited attitude has shaped both his sporting career and entrepreneurial ventures.

The former striker's diverse business interests now span agriculture and contraceptives, with his sugar cane farming operation supplying the Colombian government whilst his condom business continues to thrive.

Despite his business success, Asprilla remains a keen observer of modern football and has expressed disappointment with contemporary players' reluctance to dribble.

"I watch football, but they all look like soldiers under the coach's orders. Tell me one player who dribbles nowadays," he lamented.

The Colombian, renowned for his mesmerising dribbling ability during his playing days, believes today's footballers lack the flair that characterised his generation. However, he did single out one exception.

"I like Vinicius from Real Madrid, I see myself in him a bit," Asprilla said, praising the Brazilian winger who scored the winning goal in the Champions League final against Liverpool.
