Michail Antonio made an emotional return to football on Monday night, coming on as an 85th-minute substitute in Jamaica's 1-0 defeat to Guatemala in the Gold Cup in California.

The 35-year-old West Ham striker took to the pitch for the first time since his near-fatal car crash last December, marking a significant milestone in his recovery journey.

Though unable to prevent Jamaica from losing their group stage opener, Antonio's brief cameo represented far more than the five minutes of playing time would suggest.

The forward had not featured in any match since his Ferrari collided with a tree in December, an accident that left him with extensive injuries and fortunate to survive.

Antonio sustained a lower limb fracture in the December accident and underwent surgery before being discharged from hospital at the end of that month.

His rehabilitation has been intensive, including a warm-weather training stint in Dubai in February as he worked towards regaining match fitness.

West Ham manager Graham Potter disclosed that the striker had progressed to kicking balls with the first-team squad during the final weeks of last season.

Despite this progress, Antonio did not feature in the Hammers' end-of-season fixtures but earned selection for Steve McLaren's Jamaica squad for the Gold Cup.

He missed Jamaica's recent World Cup qualifiers against Guatemala and the British Virgin Islands earlier this month before making his comeback appearance.

Antonio's contract at West Ham expires at the end of this month, with the striker currently earning approximately £90,000 per week.

The club's all-time leading Premier League goalscorer has turned down a short-term extension on reduced wages and is considering his options.

West Ham announced they would continue supporting Antonio despite officially listing him as a free transfer for Premier League procedural purposes.

The club stated: "As a long-serving, highly-respected player, and a much-loved member of the West Ham family, the club's absolute priority at this time is to support Michail personally in his journey to resume playing at the highest level."

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

Antonio will hope for increased playing time in Jamaica's remaining group stage fixtures against Guadeloupe and Panama.

The forward is eager to demonstrate his match fitness as he navigates an uncertain future at 35 years old.

West Ham have pledged to support Antonio throughout his comeback journey, with the club stating there will be "no formal decision and announcement on his future until such time that it is considered right and appropriate."
