The club added they would be "making no further comment at this stage".
Carrick took charge at the Riverside Stadium in October 2022, replacing Chris Wilder when the club languished in the relegation zone.
His impact was immediate, transforming their fortunes and guiding them up the table.
In his first season, he led Middlesbrough to a fourth-place finish and their first play-off campaign in five years, though they fell to Coventry City in the semi-finals.
However, the Teessiders have failed to replicate that success in subsequent campaigns.

They finished eighth in the 2023-24 season, four points adrift of the play-offs, before this season's tenth-place finish marked another disappointment for chairman Steve Gibson.
Middlesbrough's promotion hopes unravelled dramatically in the final weeks of the campaign.
The team managed just one victory in their last six matches, a run that proved fatal to their play-off ambitions.

|A miserable end-of-season run hit Middlesbrough hard and left them outside the play-offs
They remained in contention for a top-six finish until the very last day of the season.
However, defeat at Coventry City condemned them to a tenth-place finish, four points behind the play-off positions.
The poor end to the campaign marked a familiar pattern. Middlesbrough had entered the final six fixtures still occupying a play-off spot but were unable to maintain their form when it mattered most.
Carrick's managerial journey began at Manchester United, where he won five Premier League titles as a player before retiring in 2018.
