The Manchester United legend has outraged Chelsea fans

Chelsea supporters have launched a fierce backlash against Manchester United legend Paul Scholes following his critical assessment of midfielder Moises Caicedo on Sky Sports' The Overlap podcast.

The former England international's comments about the Ecuador international have gone viral on social media, prompting widespread condemnation from Blues fans.

Scholes' remarks on the show have been branded as "one of the worst bits of punditry" by angry supporters who rushed to defend their star midfielder.

The controversy erupted after Scholes questioned Caicedo's contributions to Chelsea despite the player featuring in 38 matches during the 2024/25 campaign.

During the podcast discussion, Scholes expressed his scepticism about the midfielder's impact on matches.

"I think a lot of people talk about Caicedo. 'He's played 38 games'. Brilliant, what an achievement," Scholes said on The Overlap.

"But was there much quality? Did he create a lot? Did he control a lot of games for Chelsea? I don't remember that."

The Manchester United legend went further, suggesting a broader issue with modern midfielders.

"I think there's an era now, with midfielders especially, where you can go through seasons and games without really contributing," he added.

His comments drew no immediate challenge from other guests in the studio during the recording.

Chelsea fans quickly took to social media platform X to challenge Scholes' assessment with detailed statistical evidence.

One supporter wrote: "This is genuinely one of the worst bits of punditry I've ever seen. And if Paul Scholes has said this he quite simply doesn't watch much football."

The fan continued: "Saying Caicedo is 'not contributing much' is absolutely outrageous."

They highlighted that Caicedo leads all Premier League midfielders in several key metrics this season, including most passes, most passes completed, most touches, most possession won, most passes into the final third and most tackles.

Another critic declared: "Paul Scholes is the worst pundit by a mile!"

The same supporter argued that both visual observation and statistics contradict Scholes' claims about the former Brighton player.

At Chelsea's end-of-season awards ceremony in May, Caicedo received both the men's player of the season and players' player of the season honours.

Team-mate Cole Palmer offered glowing praise for the Ecuadorian midfielder following the awards.

"When you've got him next to you it's a dream really," Palmer said.

"Wow, machine. From the start of the season until now I think he's been our best player. He's a machine, wins everything back always."

Palmer added: "Always 100 per cent every day, humble and nice to everyone. Everyone loves him."
