Michael Carrick has brushed aside criticism from pundits, including Roy Keane and Gary Neville, insisting their comments have no impact on him whatsoever.

The Manchester United interim boss addressed the scrutiny he faced upon his appointment in January.

He said: "It doesn't bother me one bit. Genuinely, it doesn't.

"I'm not going to really fall out with anyone over that."

The 44-year-old framed his approach to handling external commentary as a matter of mutual courtesy.

Carrick told the BBC: "I think it's a respect thing as much as anything and I'll give and take that."

He also noted protecting younger players from such noise remains a priority for his coaching staff.

Keane had been particularly vocal in his doubts when Carrick was handed the reins following Ruben Amorim's departure last month.

The pundit, who spent 12 years at Old Trafford as a player, branded the club a "circus act" and questioned whether Carrick possessed the necessary credentials for such a demanding position.

Keane pointed to Carrick's spell at Middlesbrough, suggesting the 44-year-old had fallen short of expectations by failing to secure promotion to the top flight.

The former United midfielder said: "Look at Michael Carrick, whatever his remit was at Middlesbrough, I'm pretty sure it was to probably get promoted.

"He didn't do that. So you could say he failed there."

Carrick has silenced his critics through results on the pitch, remaining unbeaten across his opening five Premier League fixtures.

His tenure began with a statement victory in the Manchester derby against City, followed by another impressive triumph over title contenders Arsenal the subsequent weekend.

The only dropped points came in a 1-1 stalemate with West Ham earlier this month.

That run of four wins and a single draw has propelled United up the table to fourth position, now sitting just five points adrift of Aston Villa in third and eight behind leaders Manchester City.

Everton await on Monday as Carrick seeks to extend his impressive sequence.

Carrick has made no secret of his desire to remain at Old Trafford beyond the current campaign, describing the position as the "ultimate role" for him.

He said: "I'm really enjoying it, I love what I'm doing. I feel privileged to be in the position I am."

United's hierarchy are weighing up their options for a permanent appointment this summer, with Julian Nagelsmann and Roberto De Zerbi among the names under consideration alongside the former midfielder.
