The Red Devils currently sit third in the Premier League table

Andoni Iraola has positioned himself as Michael Carrick's main rival in the race to become the next permanent manager of Manchester United.

While widespread anticipation suggests Carrick will secure the role once Champions League football is guaranteed, the club maintains it will conduct a comprehensive search and hold discussions with alternative candidates.

Carrick has transformed United's fortunes after Ruben Amorim was sacked at the start of January, making him the clear frontrunner.

Nevertheless, it would remain unexpected if the former midfielder does not ultimately land the job.

United insist no final decision has been reached regarding their next head coach, with the club determined to explore all options before making an appointment.

The fallen giants remain wary of repeating what happened in 2019, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was elevated from caretaker to permanent manager amid overwhelming public pressure for his appointment, only to end up struggling.

United are determined to speak with other candidates before reaching a conclusion, according to the Telegraph.

Iraola has impressed those at Old Trafford significantly, with his work on the south coast earning strong admiration from the club's hierarchy.

His coaching methods and attacking philosophy particularly appeal to United, who believe the 43-year-old Spaniard would complement their current direction.

There is said to be a feeling within the club that Iraola's approach aligns well with the structure they have established.

Iraola has opted to depart Bournemouth when the season concludes, having turned down multiple contract extension offers from the club.

Marco Rose has already been confirmed as his replacement, with Iraola hoping to leave having guided the Cherries into European competition.

Crystal Palace are pursuing the Spaniard, with the prospect of living in London proving attractive to him.

Chelsea have also been conducting background checks on Iraola as they seek a successor to Liam Rosenior, alongside Marco Silva and Xabi Alonso.

The departing Bournemouth manager is reportedly relaxed about his next move and will assess the proposals presented to him.

While remaining in the Premier League is his preference, he would consider opportunities elsewhere in Europe or even international management.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Several high-profile names have been ruled out for the Old Trafford post.

Thomas Tuchel is no longer available after extending his contract with England, while Luis Enrique, considered an ideal candidate despite lacking Premier League experience, is poised to commit his future to Paris St-Germain.

Roberto De Zerbi attracted support within the club but has since joined Tottenham on a lengthy deal, with concerns about his demands also playing a role.

Mauricio Pochettino would be interested but cannot leave his United States role until after the World Cup, and he does not appear to be under consideration alongside Julian Nagelsmann.

A decision could follow this weekend's home fixture against Liverpool, where Champions League qualification may be confirmed.
