The signing is the first big move under Michael Carrick

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign highly rated Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta.

It is understood United will pay an initial fee of £34million, plus an additional £3.8million in potential add-ons.

The move is anticipated to go through before July, subject to the Brazilian's medical.

Ederson is understood to sign a four-year deal at Old Trafford, according to The Athletic.

United have been in need of a new man in the middle, following the departure of Casemiro from the club.

Ederson joins United, having played 30 league games last season for Atalanta and over 150 times for the club.

He has featured three times for his national team, with the move a huge step up in his playing career.

United had a positive end to the season and confirmed last month Michael Carrick will remain in charge of the club.

Carrick guided United to a third-place finish and qualification back to the Champions League.

The Englishman, who was appointed in January on a temporary basis, will stay on with a two-year contract.

Carrick took over the Red Devils with the club in seventh place and turned around their campaign.

In a statement, Carrick said: "From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United.

"Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.

"Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.

"Now it's time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose.

"Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again."

The signing of Ederson is the first big move in the Carrick era, with the midfielder playing in a similar role to his new boss.

Commenting on Carrick's appointment, the Director of football, Jason Wilcox, said: "Michael has thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue leading our men's team.

"In the time he has been doing the role, we have seen positive results on the pitch, but more than that, an approach which aligns with the club's values, traditions and history.

"Michael's achievements in leading the club back to the Champions League should not be understated.

"He has forged a strong bond with the players and can be proud of the winning culture at Carrington and in the dressing room, which we are continuing to build."
