The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner picked up a knock when playing for Inter Miami

Lionel Messi trained alone in Argentina's first World Cup practice session as the holders get their preparations underway.

The footballing icon has been dealing with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring but is expected to be ready for Argentina's World Cup opener against Algeria.

Argentina's football association said Messi worked on "specific exercises" to address his fitness concerns.

They continued: "The players who are suffering from niggles and injuries continue to work with the physiotherapy team on specific exercises on the pitch and are making good progress."

Argentina will play its last warm-up game against Iceland on June 9, before getting started in Group J.

As well as Algeria, the World Cup holders will then face Austria and conclude their group stage versus Jordan.

Messi was forced off the pitch during Inter Miami's thrilling 6-4 triumph against Philadelphia Union on May 25, departing in the 73rd minute after clutching the back of his left thigh.

The 38-year-old had been instrumental before his exit, contributing two assists, including one for German Berterame.

However, he signalled to the bench for a replacement shortly after taking a set piece.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner walked directly to the dressing room, accompanied by medical staff, rather than remaining on the substitutes' bench.

Inter Miami confirmed subsequent medical examinations had diagnosed an overload linked to muscular fatigue in Messi's left hamstring, with tests ruling out any significant tear.

Interim manager Guillermo Hoyos sought to ease concerns following the match, attributing the issue to tiredness and difficult playing conditions.

"He was tired, the field was heavy, and rather than doubt, you always say not to take the risk," Hoyos explained.

Despite the minor concerns, Messi is set to lead out Argentina for his record sixth World Cup.

The footballing great was on top of the world four years ago in Qatar when he lifted the World Cup.

A thrilling 3-3 draw, in which Messi scored twice, saw the contest head to penalties.

Gonzalo Montiel scored the winning penalty as Messi dropped to his knees, knowing he had completed football.

The 38-year-old is just three goals behind Miroslav Klose on the all-time World Cup top scorers and holds the record for most matches played at 26.
