The Red Devils are currently preparing for Sunday's showdown at Old Trafford

Jadon Sancho may finally be on the verge of escaping his troubled spell at Manchester United, with AS Roma emerging as his latest potential destination.

United have entered talks over a move that would see the winger join the Serie A club, initially on loan, with an option for a permanent transfer worth around £20million.

If completed, it would represent a significant £53m financial hit for the club, who spent £73m to bring him from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 after a lengthy pursuit.

Now 25, Sancho has endured a turbulent four years at Old Trafford, making him one of the most disappointing high-profile signings in recent club history.

Despite flashes of talent, he never established himself as a regular under a succession of managers, and United are prepared to cut their losses.

Roma, now under the guidance of highly respected coach Gian Piero Gasperini and set to compete in the Europa League, see Sancho as a potential boost to their wide options.

The England international will weigh up his next move before committing, according to The Telegraph, having already turned down offers to reunite with former United bosses Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Beşiktaş.

Solskjaer was the man who brought Sancho to Manchester, but just three months into that season he was sacked, leaving the club’s marquee summer signing in limbo.

Under Erik ten Hag, Sancho’s struggles deepened, with the Dutchman sending him to train alone in the Netherlands to rebuild physically and mentally.

A loan return to Dortmund reignited his career, with Sancho playing a key role in their run to the Champions League final in 2024.

However, the Bundesliga giants opted against bringing him back to the Westfalenstadion on a permanent basis.

Last season, another temporary switch - this time to Chelsea - brought silverware in the form of the Europa Conference League.

However, the Blues opted not to trigger their purchase clause, absorbing a penalty fee instead.

Roma have been actively exploring their attacking options, also holding discussions for Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey.

Sancho’s availability now presents them with a high-profile alternative.

The winger’s price tag places him among United’s most expensive acquisitions, behind only Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, and Antony.

The club are also seeking exits for the latter, with Real Betis keen to take Antony back after a productive loan.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho could also depart, with Chelsea monitoring the situation closely and prepared to discuss terms if an agreement with United can be reached.

For Sancho, the prospect of a fresh start in Italy could finally bring closure to an Old Trafford chapter defined more by frustration than fulfilment.
