Liverpool's poor form continued on Sunday, with Manchester United securing their first victory at Anfield since the days of Louis van Gaal back in 2016.

The Red Devils went into the match with few giving them a chance of getting anything from the contest given the widening gap between the two sides in recent years.

Yet United didn't read the script, with Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire scoring either side of a goal from Cody Gakpo to clinch all three points.

GB News now takes you through four talking points from the fixture, with Ruben Amorim finally recording back-to-back Premier League wins 11 months on from his appointment.

Controversy strikes during game

Liverpool fans, staff and players will all be furious that Mbeumo's goal was allowed to stand.

The former Brentford star struck in the second minute after being played through by Amad Diallo, with Mbeumo netting for just the second time in the Premier League for the Red Devils following his summer arrival.

However, in the build-up to the goal, Alexis Mac Allister was accidentally elbowed in the head by teammate Virgil van Dijk.

Premier League rules state that, in the event of a head injury, the match should be stopped. Should is the key word here.

The rules actually say the game must only be stopped if a player is 'seriously injured and ensures that the player is removed from the field of play'.

Yet Michael Oliver didn't see the incident and, with no foul involved, the match continued as normal.

Arne Slot wasn't happy. It's usually common practice for games to be halted. His post-match press conference will be interesting to see...

United slick in attack

Amorim raised eyebrows before the match by choosing to go with a front three of Matheus Cunha, Mason Mount and Mbeumo - with Benjamin Sesko benched.

The Slovenia international has started to show signs of promise, having scored in his previous two fixtures.

But Amorim was vindicated with the Red Devils' attack particularly slick in the first-half.

Mount has come on leaps and bounds after initially struggling to stay fit following his move from Chelsea in 2023.

In this form, however, it's hard to see him being dropped.

And Cunha and Mbeumo both looked sharp, with the latter ultimately becoming the matchwinner.

Liverpool's attackers not at the races

Liverpool have, on paper at least, arguably the strongest attack in the whole of the Premier League.

But their best players, right now, simply aren't operating at the level that supporters would expect.

Gakpo was bright, with the Netherlands international striking the woodwork three times throughout the match before his equalising goal.

His teammates, however, weren't as impressive.

Mohamed Salah looks a shadow of his usual self, with the Egypt international squandering a big chance to equalise in the second half.

And Alexander Isak continues to toil following his exciting move from Newcastle back in the summer.

Amorim has had to wait 11 months to register consecutive Premier League victories.

With that duck now over, however, the 40-year-old has something to build on.

United are improving. There are some promising signs and though they're nowhere near title contenders, displays like this can push them into Europe next season.

Whether they can continue this slight resurgence against Brighton next Saturday remains to be seen.
