The 2023 winners will be hoping to secure victory in tomorrow evening's European showdown

Pep Guardiola has surprised his Manchester City squad by cancelling training the day before their Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund, opting instead to hand his players a rare day off.

Following Sunday’s composed 3–1 victory over Bournemouth, City’s players assembled at the club’s training ground on Monday for a routine recovery session.

According to the Daily Mail, it was then that Guardiola, renowned for his meticulous preparation and relentless attention to detail, informed them that Tuesday would be theirs to rest and recuperate.

The 54-year-old’s decision marks a notable departure from his usual approach.

Guardiola has never before scrapped training on the eve of a major European fixture during his time at the Etihad Stadium.

Those close to the squad believe the move is designed to preserve energy ahead of what promises to be a demanding contest and a congested fixture run.

The City manager has been a vocal critic of the packed football calendar, repeatedly warning that the modern schedule places unsustainable physical and mental strain on players.

City’s schedule has indeed been unrelenting, with the Dortmund encounter representing their fourth Champions League match of the campaign.

Guardiola’s philosophy has often revolved around the idea of sharp minds and fresh legs, and this latest gesture appears to underline his faith in the team’s professionalism and tactical discipline.

There remains the possibility that the players will reconvene on Wednesday morning for a brief tactical session focused on specific match scenarios — a routine Guardiola has occasionally employed before crucial games.

It was a similar approach that preceded City’s pivotal 4–1 win over Aston Villa two years ago, a victory that helped propel them to another Premier League crown.

Despite the break, one member of the squad will not escape work duties.

UEFA regulations stipulate that managers must be accompanied by a player for pre-match press conferences, meaning one City star will join Guardiola in front of the media on Tuesday evening.

A win over Niko Kovac’s Borussia Dortmund at the Etihad would move City on to 10 points in the group stage, just shy of the total they accumulated across eight matches last season.

The 2023 champions are yet to find their very highest gear this campaign but have shown glimpses of the clinical precision that has defined Guardiola’s tenure.

There was also encouragement on the injury front.

Rayan Cherki, having endured a spell on the sidelines, made his first Premier League start since August in the win at Bournemouth, while Omar Marmoush added minutes from the bench in consecutive outings.

The only absentee from Sunday’s squad was Mateo Kovacic, who continues to recover from an Achilles setback that could rule him out for several months.

City’s players are expected to use their unexpected day of rest to recharge mentally and physically before focus returns to Dortmund.

The two teams last bet back in the 2022/23 season.

City won 2-1 at the Etihad that year, with John Stones and Erling Haaland finding the net.

The reverse fixture in Germany ended goalless.
