EXCLUSIVE: A former Reds star has spoken out amid the German's imminent departure

Former Liverpool star Dominic Matteo has revealed he'd love to see Ange Postecoglou named as Jurgen Klopp's replacement.

Klopp is leaving Anfield at the end of the season, having ruled the roost ever since being appointed as Brendan Rodgers' successor back in 2015.

Liverpool are, according to widespread reports, edging closer to appointing Ruben Amorim as their next manager.

The Portuguese has worked wonders at Sporting Lisbon, drawing comparisons with compatriot and football icon Jose Mourinho in the process.

Yet Matteo, speaking exclusively to GB News via William Hill, has suggested the Reds would be better off going for Postecoglou instead.

The Australian has transformed Tottenham since his arrival from Celtic, with the north London giants currently on course to play Champions League football next season.

And Matteo has been impressed by Postecoglou's work in the capital.

"For me it has to be Ange Postecoglou at Spurs," he said.

"He plays the right style of Football which would be suited at Liverpool and I don’t think the nature of the job would get to him.

"I’ve been impressed with this first season at Spurs, the way he deals with the media and the way his team plays on the front foot.

"He seems to be an excellent man manager which is needed at this high level of the game and He can deal with the pressure, plus has won silverware.

"It seems [Xabi] Alonso has chosen to not pursue the job at this stage of his career and [Roberto] De Zerbi is another manager on the list who could be available."

Liverpool are hoping to give Klopp a dream send-off by winning the Premier League title.

However, their hopes of glory were dealt a blow on Sunday following a 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

And Matteo thinks Liverpool must tighten up at the back if they're to secure the trophy they want the most.

"Sunday's performance by Liverpool was typical of some previous games where offensively Liverpool have created plenty of chances and have to convert them to put the game to bed early," he added.

"Sunday was the prime example of that with Liverpool dominating the first half and should have gone in 2-0 or 3-0 up at half time.

"But if you don’t take your chances then you are always liable to concede.

"Liverpool can’t keep relying on [Virgil] Van Dijk to perform at a very high level defensively, the others need to step up now.

"Fair play to Manchester United who scored good goals, but Liverpool’s defence has to improve for them to win the title.

"Plus, Liverpool must be more clinical in font of goal.

"They have some tricky away games coming up against Everton especially, so must kill the game off and not let teams back in.

"Attacking wise Liverpool have the potential to be ruthless and they must now show this in the run in.

"They dominate games and can’t let teams back into games once they go ahead.

"Klopp will be telling them about this as it’s crucial to have some comfortable games."

Matteo does think, however, that the draw with United won't impact the title race too much.

"I don’t think this will impact the title race a lot," he added.

"The three teams are separated by one point so it’s all to play for. Liverpool and Man City have been there before and Arsenal are the unknown quantity having been close last year as well.

"It’s too hard to call right now, but we are in for an incredible climax to the League season."
