The Reds have submitted an official bid for the defender

Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, after lodging an official bid for the 25-year-old.

The bid is believed to be in the region of £35 million, with Guehi keen on the move.

The Athletic reports the Eagles are yet to respond to the offer, after chairman Steve Parish admitted they would have to consider any bid that was tabled due to the defender’s contract situation.

The former Chelsea man has less than one year on his current deal and has no interest in renewing, meaning Oliver Glasner’s side face losing him for free next year.

"For players of that calibre to leave on a free, it's a problem for us unfortunately, Parish admitted.

"We'll just have to see what happens. But, you know, it needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind."

Liverpool are keen to add another defender to their ranks after their £26million addition of Italian defender Giovanni Leoni this summer.

The Reds are aware that Ibrahima Konate, who has been Virgil van Dijk’s main defensive partner at Anfield during Arne Slot’s tenure, has less than one year remaining on his deal.

The centre-back has also endured a difficult start to the season, with the Merseyside club conceding four goals in their opening two games.

Real Madrid are said to be keeping tabs on the situation and could come back for the French defender after they snapped up Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer this summer.

Guehi would be the latest addition in a busy transfer window at Anfield that has seen £300million spent already.

As for Palace, it represents another blow in what has been a nightmare summer for the south London club.

The club qualified for the Europa League after they beat Manchester City and lifted the FA Cup in May.

However, they were demoted to the Conference League after breaching UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules.

Palace co-owner John Textor owned a majority stake in French club Lyon, who also qualified for the competition.

The American sold his Palace shares, around 43 per cent of the club, to Woody Johnson, the owner of the New York Jets.

The Eagles also recently lost talisman Eberechi Eze to London rivals Arsenal for a £67.5million fee.

Arrivals have been hard to come by, too, with the dispute with UEFA over their qualification for the Europa League dominating much of their summer.

Glasner’s side brought in their first major summer signing this week; Yeremy Pino from Spanish club Villarreal for a £26million fee.

If they are to lose Guehi as well, it would book-end what has been a disastrous summer period at Selhurst Park.

The 25-year-old has made 160 appearances for the Eagles since £20million move from Chelsea in 2021.

During his spell in south London, Guehi has won the FA Cup and recently beat Liverpool to lift the Community Shield.

The centre-back has also made 23 appearances for the England national team.
