The centre-back looks set to leave Selhurst Park

Liverpool are said to be “close to an agreement” for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi - and the price is astonishing.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted recently that the Eagles could be forced to sell their star centre-back due to his contract situation.

The 25-year-old has just one year remaining on his current deal and has no intention of extending his stay, although he is said to be happy to remain at Selhurst Park and see his contract out.

However, Parish made it clear this would not be an option, saying after their Community Shield victory on Sunday: "For players of that calibre to leave on a free, it's a problem for us unfortunately.

"Joachim [Andersen] went [to Fulham last summer] and we couldn't afford to lose both.

"We then had another bid [for Guehi] in January but that was a different situation.

"We'll just have to see what happens. But, you know, it needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind."

With the Anderson deal long in the past and Liverpool hot on Guehi’s tail, the 23-capped England international’s time at Selhurst Park could be coming to an end.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the two clubs are “close to an agreement” on a price of just £35million.

While Guehi has one year less on his deal now, it demonstrates a remarkable fall in value from the £65million that Parish rejected for his centre-back last year from Newcastle.

However, the deal would show fantastic value for money from a Liverpool perspective, with the squad revolution showing no sign of slowing down.

They have spent around £270million this summer, adding major signings such as Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has long been an admirer of Guehi, but did not make a strong move like Newcastle did for the centre-back last summer.

However, like Ekitike and potentially Alexander Isak, Guehi looks set to be playing his football at Anfield next year.

The former Swansea defender will face stern opposition to start with captain Virgil van Dijk not going anywhere, and Ibrahima Konate impressing during their title win last year, playing 31 of 38 league matches.

However, the French centre-back also only has one year left on his deal with the Reds, and with Real Madrid rumoured to be interested, Guehi could prove to be Liverpool’s succession plan.

The Palace skipper has become a stalwart at South London, so much so that he broke into the England squad and impressed there too.

If he were to leave, it would be as a modern icon of the club. He captained the Eagles to their first two major honours: the FA Cup and, as of Sunday, the Community Shield.

Guehi has made 156 appearances at Selhurst Park since his £20million move from Chelsea in 2021.
