Alejandro Garnacho is eager to leave Old Trafford

There was once a time where Alejandro Garnacho was seen as Manchester United's future, with some even comparing the youngster to club icon, and footballing great, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fast-forward to now, however, and the Argentina international looks set to be leaving Old Trafford under a cloud.

United want to get rid of Garnacho this summer, having grown tired of the Argentina international's petulance.

He felt he should have started their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham in May. Perhaps he had a point, with the Red Devils dire as they failed to qualify for next season's Champions League following a 1-0 defeat to their Premier League rivals in Bilbao, Spain.

But Garnacho, and his brother, decided to stir the pot.

Firstly, the United winger shared an image of himself scoring against Manchester City in the 2024 FA Cup final. The timing of the post, certainly, didn't go unnoticed.

And his agent brother, Roberto, didn't help matters either. Writing on social media, he shared an image of his sibling looking dejected and said: "Working as no one else, helping every round, coming from two goals in the last two finals, just to be on the pitch for 19 mins and get thrown under the bus. Wowe hahahahahaha."

Back when Sir Alex Ferguson ruled the roost, social media wasn't really a thing for the most part - until the twilight years of the Scot's glittering tenure in the dugout.

No United player would have dared react to a setback in such fashion, however. Ferguson ruled with an iron first and Amorim, his latest successor, is eager to do the same.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Garnacho has informed United that he wants to join Chelsea - who have emerged as frontrunners for the 21-year-old, ahead of Serie A side Napoli.

Furthermore, the Argentine has told United that he'll sit on the bench for the next six to 12 months if he doesn't get his dream move to Stamford Bridge.

But so frustrating and petulant have Garnacho's antics been, the club should seriously ponder taking a tough stance. Maybe, just maybe, putting him with the reserves would be the best course of action.

Player power has been a major problem at Old Trafford since Ferguson emotionally walked off into the sunset back in 2013, shortly after winning his 13th league crown with the club.

Jadon Sancho, Garnacho's team-mate, basically insinuated that Erik ten Hag was a liar when he was overlooked for a crunch Premier League fixture against Arsenal in 2023.

Look at him now. Nobody seems to want to buy Sancho, with links abroad going cold. There is, as things stand, a genuine possibility he remains at the club as an exile. Potential suitors appear to be scared off.

United chose to side with Paul Pogba, instead of manager Jose Mourinho, when their relationship broke down in 2018.

Pogba, for all his quality, had too much influence and sway. He was popular with his team-mates and United, knowing he sold shirts aplenty, axed a Mourinho who couldn't hide his frustration with the hierarchy any longer.

Senior stars also threw their toys out of the pram when David Moyes and Louis van Gaal were in charge. Individuals who had won silverware under Ferguson felt they were entitled to down tools because they didn't like a fresh approach.

Garnacho has, this summer, been stirring the pot. He wore an Aston Villa shirt sporting Marcus Rashford's name on the back knowing full well there would be a backlash on social media.

That's despite United insiders saying the pair have never really been close. Team-mates, rather than friends. Colleagues, rather than a duo that would enjoy each other's company outside of football.

If Chelsea pay United the £50million they want, then it's feasible Garnacho will go.

Yet the fallen giants should consider getting the £70m they were initially targeting instead. Not only could that money go on fresh reinforcements but it would show, after so many years of erratic business, they're finally a force to be reckoned with in the boardroom.

United have had over 100 better players than Garnacho throughout their history. Letting him rot in the reserves would send a bold message to the rest of the squad that Amorim is in charge - not them.
