Inter Milan 0-1 Liverpool: Dominik Szoboszlai struck a late penalty to secure a vital victory

Liverpool claimed a vital 1-0 Champions League triumph at the San Siro on Tuesday evening, with Dominik Szoboszlai converting from the penalty spot in the 88th minute to seal three points against Inter Milan.

The Hungarian midfielder's decisive strike came amid considerable turmoil surrounding the club, with Mohamed Salah omitted from the travelling squad after the Egyptian winger alleged Liverpool had "thrown him under the bus" and that his relationship with manager Arne Slot had deteriorated.

The victory lifted the Reds to 12 points from six matches, propelling them into the top eight where automatic qualification for the last 16 awaits.

The spot-kick was awarded following a VAR review that determined Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni had tugged at substitute Florian Wirtz's shirt inside the penalty area.

Wirtz, who had replaced Alexander Isak in the 68th minute, drew the crucial foul that gave Liverpool their opportunity.

Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer guessed correctly and dived to his right, but the sheer power behind Szoboszlai's emphatic finish proved unstoppable as the ball rifled into the corner.

The Reds subsequently held firm during six minutes of added time, with Conor Bradley winning a free-kick and Alexis Mac Allister battling through cramp as Liverpool saw out the contest.

Liverpool had earlier believed they had broken the deadlock in the 32nd minute when Ibrahima Konate nodded home from a corner.

However, referee Felix Zwayer ruled out the effort following an extended VAR examination that lasted approximately seven to eight minutes, with the review determining that Hugo Ekitike had handled the ball moments before Konate's close-range header.

The result brought Inter's remarkable 18-match unbeaten streak at the San Siro to an end, marking their first home defeat in 19 matches in the competition.

For Liverpool, it represented a fourth consecutive victory at the famous stadium across as many years.

Speaking to Amazon Prime after the match, left-back Andy Robertson described the situation surrounding Salah as "a tough situation," adding: "We're talking about one of the greatest players to play for this club.

"I signed in the same window as him. Whatever has happened, happened. Internally, we're all together."

When pressed on the forward's future at Anfield, Robertson stated: "That'll be up to other people, it's not up to me.

"I love playing with Mo Salah and I hope to continue playing with him."

The Scotland captain also acknowledged the significance of the result, noting the team understood recent performances had fallen short of expectations.
