Liverpool FC have released a statement indicating that they are in full communication with Merseyside Police after a serious incident during the club's title celebrations on Monday.

A car drove into a crowd of people with several people injured on Water Street on Monday afternoon.


Merseyside Police have confirmed to GB News that a 53-year-old white British male was detained at the scene.

Eyewitnesses told GB News Liverpool Lime Street station has been shut and "[there were] tonnes of police and ambulance came rushing in, it was mad."

And Liverpool FC have now released the following statement on social media: "We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident.

"We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident."

Liverpool fans had taken to the streets of the city in their thousands to celebrate winning the Premier League.

An open-top bus of the players and coaches paraded through the streets with the trophy amid jubilant scenes.

Even the wet weather did not put off fans where a sea of red engulfed the city.

But the celebrations rapidly became chaotic after a car drove down a street full of people, knocking down several pedestrians.

It is not known how many people were injured during the incident, nor if there have been any fatalities.

Emergency services responded quickly to the incident with police surrounding the vehicle and detaining the driver.

Merseyside Police say just after 18:00 on Monday evening, they received reports of a car colliding with people on Water Street.

A statement from the police said: "We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight's incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre.

"We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.

"Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.
