Liverpool have made a habit of leaving it late to win games this season, and it was no different as an 84th-minute winner from Hugo Ekitike secured the win for the Premier League champions.

The celebrations were short-lived for the newly signed striker as he was given a second yellow for his celebration and sent off just moments later. The British record signing also got himself on the scoresheet as Alexander Isak scored his first goal in red just before the end of the first half.

Southampton equalised in the 74th minute, but they didn't have the ability to take the Reds to penalties.

After the match, Isak said: "Amazing. It was good to get back out there and score my first goal here and get the win as well. A good night.

"I should have scored earlier as well. It is part of being a striker, you miss some and score some. The most important thing is to shake it off and be ready for the next one.

"I feel confident in myself that things will work out and when I get chances I will put them away."

Club World Cup champions Chelsea were made to work to get a result against Lincoln. The first half saw Enzo Maresca’s men completely outplayed by Lincoln, with a well-earned goal to shock the visitors at the end of the first half.

Chelsea came out for the second half looking like a completely different side.

Two goals in less than five minutes turned the game on its head, and the Premier League side was able to progress and keep Lincoln at bay.

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

After the game Maresca said: "We knew that it was a very tricky game because they are the most direct team in league one, so crosses, free kicks, throw ins into the box, you have to defend those. We struggled a little bit in the first half but second half we were much better and we won the game.

"It was not an easy game. I told them (the players) it was not an easy game. That is why I was so annoyed in the first half, because we know that we needed to do better. Overall, they did well."

Wolves fought their way past Everton in a half-empty Molineux, in a dull affair that saw two goals from the home side seal the deal.

Marshall Munetsi rebounded a shot to score the opener to get the low turnout of fans excited at the half-hour mark before new summer signing Tolu Arokodare chipped the keeper to score his first goal for the club.

The Premier League sides will now turn their attention back to the league as the busy schedule sees them playing again this weekend
