The Blues boss will be targeting a much-needed win at Stamford Bridge on Sunday

Enzo Fernandez will miss Chelsea's Premier League encounter with Manchester City on Sunday, despite having personally apologised to manager Liam Rosenior earlier this week.

The Argentine midfielder held internal discussions with the club following his absence from the FA Cup quarter-final triumph over Port Vale, which served as the first match of his suspension.

Rosenior confirmed the ban would not be lifted for the City fixture, stating: "He's apologised to me, he's apologised to the club, and we'll deal with that after a massive game on Sunday."

The Chelsea boss acknowledged that obstacles remain between Fernandez and the club before any return can materialise.

Fernandez received a two-game suspension from his own club after interviews conducted during the recent international break with Argentina were deemed to have crossed a line.

The midfielder spoke openly about his desire to live in Madrid and expressed admiration for Real Madrid legends Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

His comments came after he had previously cast doubt over his Chelsea future, admitting uncertainty about whether he would remain at Stamford Bridge beyond this summer.

Fernandez also drew criticism for publicly questioning the club's decision to part ways with former manager Enzo Maresca.

Rosenior elaborated on the gravity of the situation while offering support for his player.

"It's a serious meeting about something very serious. I'm not questioning Enzo's character, I'm not questioning who he is as a person," he said.

The manager also emphasised his belief in proportionate discipline, adding: "I believe people make mistakes and you can't overstep the punishment for the mistake.

"We've made a sanction, we made a decision, I made a decision, and what I want for Enzo is for him to come on here and have an outstanding career."

Rosenior then expressed optimism about Fernandez's long-term prospects at the club, stating: "He won't play on Sunday, but hopefully after that, he'll be a massive part of the group moving forward."

However, the midfielder's participation in Chelsea's subsequent Premier League fixture against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge appears far from guaranteed.

Rosenior indicated that unresolved matters still need addressing, noting: "There are still a few hurdles that need to be overcome that I won't go into.

"But at the same time I want every player really, really focused now on a huge run."

Fernandez's agent, Javier Pastore, has spoken publicly in defence of his client during the disciplinary process.

Chelsea face additional selection concerns for the City match, with Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah and Levi Colwill all unavailable.

City will start the match as favourites, with Pep Guardiola's side eager to reel in Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.
