The England international has endured a nightmare loan spell at the London Stadium

Kalvin Phillips is wanted back at Leeds amid his terrible spell at West Ham, according to reports.

The England international was hoping to rediscover his mojo at the London Stadium when he joined on loan from Manchester City back in the New Year.

Yet Phillips has struggled during his time in the capital and, on Saturday, his spell at West Ham hit a new low.

The midfielder gave away a penalty which was scored by Alexander Isak as Newcastle came from 3-1 down to win 4-3 at St James' Park.

And Phillips, after the game, was caught giving a supporter the middle finger as he made his way onto the team bus.

Now, according to The Sun, the 28-year-old is wanted back at Leeds if they secure promotion back to the Premier League.

Phillips departed the club in 2022, having made 234 appearances for the side - scoring 14 times.

Leeds are currently second in the Championship table, behind Ipswich, having picked up 83 points from their 39 matches so far.

Leicester could overtake them, however, if the Foxes are able to beat Norwich City at the King Power Stadium on Monday.

Don't Miss

While Leeds want Phillips back at Elland Road, however, it's unclear if they'll get their wish.

City would like to use the England midfielder as bait as they look to raid West Ham for Lucas Paqueta.

Paqueta has impressed for the Hammers this term, with the 26-year-old scoring three goals and clocking up six assists from 23 league appearances.

He was linked with a move to City back in the summer, only for the reigning champions to land Matheus Nunes from Wolves instead.

While City would like to use Phillips in a swap deal for Paqueta, it's hard to see that happening right now.

His poor form for West Ham is likely to deter David Moyes' side from making a deal for the midfielder permanent.

Phillips has made just three starts and made a terrible error on his debut against Bournemouth, gifting a goal to Dominic Solanke.

The former Leeds star was sent off against Nottingham Forest in February.

And his poor cameo off the bench against Newcastle has now worsened his situation.

Moyes was asked about his decision to bring on Phillips as his side crashed to defeat on Tyneside.

The Scot admitted the call didn't work, saying: "The [second] penalty kick [awarded for Phillips' foul on Gordon on 77 minutes] is a huge turning point, but I also thought we made a change because we felt as if they had got on top and missed a couple of chances.

"We tried to give ourselves another midfield player at 3-1 up and we didn't want to wait for it to get to 3-2.

"Probably that decision didn't work on the day, but more importantly I think the boy puts his foot in front of Kalvin and I don't know how he's supposed to see his leg.

"The penalty kick makes it 3-2 and we had been doing OK.

"We gave up a couple of chances before that which I didn't like and they had started to get some control shooting down the hill, but we had another day when very few things went for us.

"We got ourselves in front and did a lot of good things.

"We looked a real threat in our attacking play for most of the day. We just couldn't be defensively sound and, let's be fair, we've had that issue many times already this season."
