The former football star has vented his fury on social media once again

Joey Barton initially congratulated Mary Earps after the England star won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

But he's now performed a U-turn and slammed the decision to give the prize to the Manchester United goalkeeper.

On Monday night, Barton reacted to Earps' award win.

He took to X to simply say 'well done Mary' while accompanying his post with clapping emojis.

But Barton has now seemingly backtracked and insultingly called Earps a 'sack of spuds' on the same platform.

The former Manchester City, Newcastle, QPR and Marseille star also claimed there is a 'culture of snowflakes'.

He said: "To win before Ronnie O’Sullivan and Frankie Dettori…?

"Well, that’s just madness to me.

"Both almost genius like in their respective fields.

"They’ve lost to a big sack of spuds that plays in goal for a girls team.

"That’s the world we live in. This all started with the ‘Everyone’s a Winner’ sport’s days.

"This is what happens when you celebrate mediocre. You breed this weak culture. A culture of losers.

"A culture of snowflakes."

Fans have already responded to Barton's comments, condemning the 41-year-old and expressing a belief he's crossed a line.

"I’m so confused you literally just congratulated her," said one user.

"Lad in work today called her Mary Burps in the group chat & I reported him to HR and said he was being sexist," said a second.

"He's got a meeting after lunch. By the way - I know someone who works with computers & I've filed a complaint against your x account. Enjoy your ban :)."

A third said: "Here we go again."

A fourth fan pointed out: "Gazza won it in 1990 we went out at the semi finals, Michael Owen 98 second round, Beckham 2001 for scoring a goal just for us to qualify."

And a fifth simply said: "It’s a public vote .. get over it..."

Earps, however, is unlikely to care.

She was delighted after winning the award in Manchester and responded by saying: "First of all, I’m so humbled to be on a list of such incredible athletes.

"Sport is a fantastic thing where it brings the world together and it's been brilliant to listen to everyone's stories, so congratulations to you all.

"Thanks for voting for me everyone!

"It’s not been the easiest journey and I wouldn't be here without my loved ones in my corner, who have been with me through the really not so great times.

"The last two years have been unbelievable, I’ve done more than I could have ever imagined.

"Thank you to my goalkeeping coaches, my team-mates and my coaches."
