Jesse Lingard has completed a groundbreaking transfer to Corinthians, making history as the first English footballer to compete in Brazil's top division.

The 33-year-old attacking midfielder, who came through Manchester United's academy at Carrington, has penned a deal with the São Paulo-based club running until the conclusion of 2026.

His contract also contains an automatic extension clause, potentially keeping him at the Brazilian Serie A outfit for an additional season.

The former England international had been without a club since December following his departure from South Korean side FC Seoul, where he spent his most recent campaign.

Lingard's journey to South America caps a turbulent period since falling out of favour at Old Trafford.

During the 2020/21 campaign, the midfielder secured a loan move to West Ham in search of regular first-team football.

What followed was a remarkable purple patch that appeared destined to revive his career at the highest level.

In just 16 outings for the Hammers, he netted nine times whilst also contributing five assists.

However, his return to United the following season proved forgettable, and when his contract expired at the end of 2021/22, he departed for Nottingham Forest on a free transfer.

His stint in the East Midlands failed to deliver the desired results, prompting Lingard to seek a fresh challenge overseas with FC Seoul.

That Korean adventure has now concluded, leaving the Warrington-born player searching for his next destination after becoming a free agent at the turn of the year.

Brazil represents yet another significant cultural transition for the well-travelled midfielder, who has now experienced football across three continents since his Old Trafford exit.

The move to Corinthians offers Lingard the chance to reinvent himself once more in an entirely new footballing environment, far removed from the Premier League spotlight where he made his name.

Lingard will not be navigating this Brazilian adventure in isolation, as a familiar face awaits him at Corinthians.

Dutch forward Memphis Depay, who also struggled to make his mark during his time at Old Trafford, is already on the club's books.

The pair shared the pitch on 31 occasions during Depay's spell at United between 2015 and 2017, before the Dutchman departed for Lyon.

Their reunion in São Paulo adds an intriguing dimension to Lingard's Brazilian chapter.

The Englishman will don the number 77 shirt at his new club, having been unable to secure his favoured 14 or 11.
