Antoine Semenyo reported racial abuse during Liverpool vs Bournemouth

Jamie Carragher spoke out after suspected racist abuse during Liverpool vs Bournemouth in the opening day of the Premier League season.

Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused by Liverpool fans in the first-half of the match at Anfield to referee Anthony Taylor.


Taylor then halted the match, moving to the touchline to inform both managers of the decision.

Semenyo was spoken to by Taylor with the Bournemouth player looking stricken by the incident, as Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk also had a word with the forward.

The match eventually resumed, with Liverpool taking the lead shortly after through debutant Hugo Ekitike.

Speaking about the incident at half-time, Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Carragher denounced the incident.

He said: "With the amount of campaigns we have, it's shocking to see an incident like that.

"A shocking incident and rightly reported to the referee."

Fellow pundit Gary Neville also chimed in, saying: "It overshadows what should be an amazing night. The first day of the Premier League season, a beautiful day.

"And that boy has been racially abused. It's despicable. I can't imagine what is going through that fan's mind.

"However, it has happened. It will keep on happening. It's a sorry state."

Ultimately, it is an embarrassing situation for the Premier League on the first day of a new season that a match has been marred by racial abuse.

Liverpool went on to take the lead through Ekitike, who bundled his way through on goal before easily slotting past Bournemouth keeper Djordje Petrovic.

The Frenchman then turned provider in the second-half, passing to Cody Gakpo, whose fine finish doubled the lead for the Reds shortly after the break.
