Referee Anthony Taylor brought a halt to the match on the opening day of the season

Antoine Semenyo was allegedly racially abused during Liverpool vs Bournemouth, with referee Anthony Taylor bringing a halt to the match as a result.

On the opening day of the new Premier League season, racist abuse appears to have taken centre stage.

Around 30 minutes into the match, referee Taylor inexplicably called a halt to the match and ran to the touchline where he brought both managers together.

Whether or not the incident is related remains to be seen.

The match resumed shortly after, with Liverpool taking the lead five minutes later.

New signing Hugo Ekitike opened his account for the season on his Anfield debut after bulldozing his way through on goal.

Bournemouth defender Marco Senesi failed with his tackle, with the ball bobbling off him kindly for Ekitike.

It left the £80million man one-on-one with Cherries goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, with the former Eintracht Frankfurt star slotting past him with ease.

It sent the Anfield crowd into a frenzy, with plenty of pressure on Ekitike to deliver this season already.

Ekitike is just one of the new faces at Liverpool this summer after a summer that has included the arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.

Over £300million has been spent already this summer with more spending planned if Arne Slot gets his way.

The British transfer record could be broken for a second time - after Liverpool forked out £116.5million for Wirtz - if a bid for Alexander Isak is agreed, though Newcastle could demand up to £150million.
