The former Hammers boss has revealed he's interested in returning to the dugout

Harry Redknapp has declared he would return to West Ham without payment in an effort to rescue the club from Premier League relegation.

The 78-year-old, who has been without a job in management since leaving Birmingham City, has thrown his hat into the ring with Nuno Espirito Santo battling to avoid the sack.

The former Hammers manager made the offer on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after his old side lost 2-1 to Nottingham Forest to dent their hopes of staying in the Premier League.

"I'd work for nothing. I'd go anywhere if someone rang me up, I'd go and do it for nothing," Redknapp told talkSPORT.

"I really would, I'd enjoy it. It's not the money. I'd enjoy going in and being around the players. I love it."

The 79-year-old referenced Martin O'Neill's recent appointment at Celtic, noting the experienced Irishman understands the game and suggesting football management is straightforward at its core.

West Ham find themselves in a perilous position, sitting seven points adrift of safety with the threat of Championship football looming for the first time since 2012.

Nuno faces the sack should results fail to improve in the coming weeks.

The Portuguese manager's tenure at the London Stadium has been nothing short of dismal, securing just two victories from his 16 matches since taking over from Graham Potter in September.

Across the entire campaign, the Hammers have managed only three top-flight wins, leaving them staring at the very real prospect of dropping out of the Premier League.

Following Tuesday night's 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest, Redknapp delivered a scathing assessment of the squad's capabilities.

The former manager pointed the finger squarely at the club's transfer strategy rather than those in the dugout.

"Nuno obviously is coming under fierce criticism and getting the blame, but at the end of the day the players are what they are," Redknapp said.

He argued that whoever takes charge at the London Stadium faces an uphill battle with the current personnel.

"In West Ham's situation, whoever goes in has got to get the best out of an average group, to be brutal," he added.

Redknapp also defended the managers who have struggled at the helm, insisting the problem lies with the playing staff rather than coaching.

"People forget, they always end up sacking the manager and there's no leadership. What can he do?" he questioned.

"You can bring who you want in there, you can bring Pep [Guardiola] in with that team. He's not going to suddenly get them shooting up the league."

His verdict on the players was brutal, too.

"The players are short of quality, they're not good enough. They're where they are in the league, that's how good the players are."
