The England international has opened up following the match on Merseyside

Harry Maguire has admitted 'it's nice to have one over Liverpool' after heading Manchester United to a dramatic 2-1 win at Anfield on Sunday.

The match looked as though it would end level after goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Cody Gakpo.

But Maguire headed home late on, with the England international rising to meet a wonderful lofted pass from captain Bruno Fernandes.

It was a sensational win for United, who have now recorded back-to-back Premier League victories for the first time.

And Maguire, speaking to Sky Sports after the fixture, relished his status as matchwinner - with the fallen giants previously failing to beat their fierce rivals on their own turf since 2016.

"It means everything. They had had the better of us over the last few years and it's not been good for our club," said the 32-year-old.

"We have not given our fans enough days like today, so it has been a long time coming, coming to this ground and picking up three points.

"It is not just three points to the club and to the boys.

"I have been coming to this ground for seven years now and to not get three points have been tough. It's for the fans and I hope they had a great night tonight.

"It is nice to have one over Liverpool. Football is all about memories and making special memories.

"I am sure all the fans will go home with memories, we will all go home happy."

Maguire insists, however, that United won't let the victory get to their heads as they chase a first league title since 2013.

"We won't get carried away because we can't afford that as a club, we will use it as motivation," he added.

"In this club, it will mean a lot this week and then we have Brighton at home next week. So we have to remain calm headed."

Pundits in the Sky Sports studio were impressed with United's display, though admitted they must be more consistent.

Roy Keane said: "I wouldn't go as far as to say United are back but it's a huge win for them.

"We've all been critical of this group of players over the last year but on today's performance, they showed grit. They stuck at it and you felt they had goals in them.

"It's a big moment for these players and they should enjoy it.

"But now they have to kick on."

And Jamie Redknapp criticised Liverpool's lack of cutting edge in front of goal on a day where the likes of Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak failed to make much of an impact.

"They had so many chances. Gakpo had three," he said.

"There was always an air of desperation. I never felt they had that calmness. The substitutions they made...

"It's a blow. Four losses on the spin. No one would've seen that.

"All of the signings on paper looked like great signings. Now, there are more questions than answers.

"Time will tell if Man Utd can kick on but this feels like a huge win for the manager.

"He got every call right."
