Harry Maguire snubbed David Beckham before signing bumper new Man United contract

Italian champions Napoli had also expressed interest in acquiring the England international.

According to The Sun, Beckham was eyeing Maguire to play in America. However, the defender was never interested, despite the lure of strutting his stuff alongside Lionel Messi.

"The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us," Maguire said after extending his stay at Old Trafford.

"You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad."

The Sheffield-born defender has now made 266 appearances for the Red Devils.

This contract renewal marks an extraordinary turnaround for Maguire, who was stripped of the captaincy by former manager Erik ten Hag in 2023.

That same summer, West Ham had a £30m bid accepted for the defender, but the transfer fell through when the Hammers could not bridge the gap on his £200,000-a-week salary.

Since then, Maguire has rebuilt his standing at the club and become integral to interim manager Michael Carrick's plans.

He has featured in the starting lineup for every one of Carrick's ten matches in charge, establishing himself as one of United's most important players.

The 65-cap international joined from Leicester in 2019 for £85m, a sum that remains the world-record fee for a defender.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has brought Maguire back into the national setup during the most recent international break, ending an 18-month exile from Three Lions duty ahead of this summer's World Cup.

Reports indicate Tuchel kept in regular contact with the defender earlier in the campaign when a thigh problem sidelined him for nine club fixtures.

Maguire has also revealed his ambition to obtain his coaching qualifications while at United.

"Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour," he stated.

"It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day.

"I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together."

Director of football Jason Wilcox praised the defender's character following the announcement.

"Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United," Wilcox said. "He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad.

"Harry, like everyone at the club, is completely determined to help Manchester United to achieve regular and sustained success."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appointed Maguire as club captain in January 2020 following Ashley Young's departure to Inter Milan, a role he held for three-and-a-half years.

The defender will miss Monday's Premier League clash against Leeds through suspension after his red card in last month's 2-2 draw at Bournemouth.
