The former Brighton boss could be set for a return to management sooner than expected

Former West Ham and Chelsea boss Graham Potter has declared his interest in the Swedish national team head coach vacancy.

The Blue and Yellows sacked boss Jon Dahl Tomasson on Tuesday morning, after the former Newcastle star guided the team to nine wins in 18 matches.

But recent woes on the pitch proved too much for the 49-year-old, with the Swedish Football Association making the decision to relieve him of his duties.

Two defeats against Kosovo, with a 2-0 loss against Switzerland sandwiched in between, leaves the side on just one point from their opening four World Cup qualifier matches and their hopes for a trip to the US, Mexico and Canada next summer in tatters.

The Dane’s insistence on using a 3-5-2 formation has ultimately been his downfall. The system means Newcastle star Anthony Elanga has been forced out of the starting line-up.

And the 23-year-old was left furious with the tactical decision. While walking down the tunnel, according to Radiosporten reporter Jonas Enarson, Elanga fumed: “The f***king system has to go!”

Dahl Tomasson was then asked what he had made of Elanga's tunnel outburst and said: "I haven't heard what he said, so I can't comment on it."

Despite boasting an elite strike partnership of £125million man Alexander Isak and new Arsenal talisman Viktor Gyokeres, Sweden have failed to score in three consecutive games.

"It's not good enough, and it's a terrible result. It really hurts, we forgot how to score goals and I don't know why,” the ill-fated Dahl Tomasson admitted after the recent Kosovo defeat.

With frustration reaching boiling point, the Swedish FA announced their decision on Tuesday morning. Merely hours later, Graham Potter spoke to Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen, declaring his interest in the now-vacant role.

“I’m actually in Sweden right now, in my house in Sweden,” Potter admitted. “I’m between jobs and just left the Premier League. I'm open to anything, really, where I feel I can help. The job as manager of the Swedish national team is fantastic.

“I’m only 50 years old and I still have a lot to offer. It's not about me finding a job at a specific level, but about finding something where I feel I can help and where I can make a difference.

“I also want to feel that we are on the same page. Those are my criteria.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have the career I've had. It's meant that I'm in a very good position financially. It's reached the level where I don't have to consider finances as a reason to take a job or not.”

Potter, who was sacked by West Ham and replaced by former Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espírito Santo just last month, has a strong connection with Sweden.

The 50-year-old spent seven years at Ostersund, joining the side in 2011. At the time, the club were in the fourth tier of Swedish football, but Potter guided the club to three promotions that led them to playing top-flight football by 2015.

Potter then led the side to a historic appearance in the Europa League, beating Galatasaray, PAOK, and Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in a remarkable campaign.

The former Brighton boss is said to have rejected a proposal from the Sweden national team in 2023, after his departure from Chelsea, with Potter choosing to focus on a return to club football.

Now, after another difficult spell in the Premier League, Sweden could prove to be the perfect opportunity in a familiar environment.

But if he is to be offered the role, Potter will be inheriting a squad in disarray. Due to their Nations League group stage triumph, Sweden have one more shot at World Cup qualification, via a play-off. The Swedish FA now need to decide if Potter is the man to save the blushes of Isak, Gyokeres and Elanga.
