Kobbie Mainoo continues to impress at Old Trafford

Gary Lineker has jokingly suggested Kobbie Mainoo should 'sue' former manager Ruben Amorim following his impressive performance for Manchester United against Tottenham on Saturday.

The Red Devils won 2-0 at Old Trafford, with Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes netting in either half to secure all three points.

Mainoo was, however, impressive once again with the 20-year-old producing a composed performance in the middle of the park.

The England international regularly struggled under Amorim and, prior to Michael Carrick's appointment, hadn't even started a Premier League game this season.

But Mainoo has fully seized his chance to become one of the first names in Carrick's starting XI.

Lineker, speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, jokingly suggested that the United star should 'sue' Amorim given how he was treated.

"Do you know what? If I was Kobbie Mainoo – and I say this in jest – I'd be thinking about whether I should sue him [Amorim] or not," he quipped.

"He's taken a year out of that kid's career. This kid is a wonderful footballer.

"God, he makes it look so easy. He wants the ball, he receives it with anyone around him and he turns, always makes the right decisions, he's graceful.

"I mean, come on! He's been absolutely detrimental to his career."

With the World Cup on the horizon, Mainoo is pressing to be included in Thomas Tuchel's England squad.

He was previously standout for the Three Lions at Euro 2024, shining as Gareth Southgate's men made the final.

Lineker feels Mainoo warrants inclusion given his impressive performances for United, who have now won their last four matches.

The former Match of the Day presenter added: "If he doesn't make the World Cup squad... and I sense he probably will if he can stay fit and if he keeps playing because he's just a seriously good footballer.

"I know his brother got in a bit of trouble for saying on the T-shirt, 'Free Kobbie', but he has absolutely got a point, his brother.

"What was he (Amorim) thinking?!"

Mainoo will be hoping to start when United go up against West Ham at the London Stadium on Tuesday.

The Hammers will prove to be tough opposition, however, having defeated Burnley 2-0 on Saturday.

United could only draw 1-1 with West Ham earlier in the season.

Diogo Dalot scored to put the Red Devils ahead, only for Nuno Espirito Santo's team to earn a point following a goal from Soungoutou Magassa with seven minutes remaining.
