Paolo Di Canio has gone viral

Paolo Di Canio has become an internet sensation after repeatedly slamming his head against a desk during Sky Sports Italy's Champions League quarter-final broadcast yesterday evening.

The 57-year-old former West Ham and Lazio forward, who works as a regular pundit for the Italian broadcaster, stunned viewers with the extraordinary outburst.

The incident occurred following an on-air exchange with presenter Federica Masolin.

Di Canio banged his forehead against the studio furniture not once but three times.

The bizarre moment demonstrated that the Italian retains the fiery temperament and theatrical personality that made him a cult favourite during his playing career.

The forceful impacts appeared to leave Di Canio bleeding from his forehead, shocking both the production crew and millions of Italian viewers watching at home.

Fellow pundit Fabio Capello, the former England and Real Madrid manager, swiftly came to his colleague's aid by handing him a tissue to stem the bleeding.

Masolin appeared visibly taken aback by what had unfolded in front of her, laughing in disbelief as Di Canio returned to his seat clutching the tissue against his head.

The former striker could be seen regretting his impulsive actions as he attempted to compose himself following the remarkable studio incident.

Footage of the incident quickly spread across social media platforms, with football supporters sharing their reactions to the extraordinary scenes.

One bewildered fan posted on X: "Hahahaha, absolute chaos this lad. What a player, though."

Another viewer commented: "Unhinged Paolo is the best Paolo."

A third user jokingly referenced the professional wrestler Goldberg, known for his pre-match headbutting ritual, writing: "Goldberg is proud."

Others responded with sarcasm, with one remarking: "He always used to seem so chill."

The incident inevitably drew comparisons to Di Canio's most notorious moment of hot-headedness from his playing career.

During the 1998/99 season whilst at Sheffield Wednesday, the Italian pushed referee Paul Alcock to the ground after being shown a red card in a match against Arsenal.

Alcock, who died in 2018, fell backwards in what became one of the Premier League's most memorable disciplinary incidents.

The consequences for Di Canio were severe, with league authorities imposing an 11-match suspension and a £10,000 fine for the act of aggression against the official.
