Newcastle defender Fabian Schar has arrived back safely on Tyneside following what he described as some of the most frightening days of his life.
The 34-year-old Swiss international found himself caught up in Iran's retaliatory missile and drone strikes against Gulf States, which came in response to bombardment by the US and Israel.
Schar had travelled to the region last week with Newcastle's blessing to continue his recovery from a serious ankle injury sustained in January.
What was intended as a rehabilitation trip in warmer conditions rapidly transformed into a harrowing experience as the military conflict escalated around him.
Taking to Instagram upon his return, the centre-back shared the full extent of his ordeal with followers.
"I've just had a few of my most terrifying days having unfortunately witnessed first-hand what's happening in the Middle East," Schar wrote.
"I was there as part of my rehabilitation programme and I'm glad I found a way to get home safely.

"But what we experienced there, and what's happening right now, is truly frightening. I hope that help gets to all of the people who need it in those affected areas."
The post featured an image that appeared to show the interior of a bunker, with mattresses visible scattered across the floor.
The travel chaos caused by the attacks saw more than 3,400 flights grounded in the aftermath of last weekend's events.

Beyond his Middle East ordeal, questions remain over Schar's long-term future at St James' Park.
