Torrential rain and thunderstorms have caused major disruption to the friendly

England's World Cup warm-up fixture against Costa Rica in Orlando is facing substantial disruption this evening after powerful storms caused widespread flooding across the Inter&Co Stadium playing surface.

The match, scheduled for a 9pm BST start, remains in doubt as torrential downpours continue to batter the Florida venue just hours before the planned kick-off.

It has since been confirmed that the original kick-off will be delayed by an hour - with a new kick-off time of 10pm BST.

Stadium authorities have issued weather warnings to supporters present at the ground, with the large LED display instructing those in attendance to take cover immediately.

Standing water has accumulated across significant portions of the pitch following the heavy rainfall.

Local officials remain optimistic the game will proceed, though delays appear increasingly likely while lightning conditions persist across the Orlando area.

Safety regulations at the venue stipulate that the stadium must remain closed for a minimum of 30 minutes following any detected lightning strike within the surrounding area.

This protocol, designed to safeguard players, staff and spectators from potential strikes, poses a direct threat to the scheduled start time should electrical activity continue.

BBC Sport's Ian Dennis, reporting from the ground, described the conditions: "More water than grass… teams will arrive as normal.

"Each thunder strike means the stadium can't be opened for at least 30 minutes and we've just had a real crack!!

"Anymore after 2.45pm local time will impact KO. Told the water will clear quickly…"

A further hour of rainfall is anticipated over the Orlando region.

The fixture represents a vital component of Thomas Tuchel's preparations ahead of the World Cup, with England's opening group stage encounter against Croatia looming.

Should Wednesday's match be abandoned or cancelled entirely, the England manager has an alternative option available.

The squad is due to participate in an unofficial behind-closed-doors friendly against Miami FC on Thursday, which would assume greater significance for Tuchel's tactical planning.

That private fixture could become the primary opportunity for the manager to assess his preferred starting lineup before competitive action begins.

While securing meaningful match time remains the priority for England's tournament readiness, the safety of all those present at the stadium takes precedence over playing considerations.
