Gareth Southgate’s team have so far flattered to deceive

Peter Shilton has offered Jordan Pickford his advice on how to approach a penalty shootout as England prepare for the possibility of one in tonight’s Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland.

Gareth Southgate’s team have so far flattered to deceive at the tournament with fans lamenting a lack of attacking prowess in a talent-packed team.

The Three Lions overcame Slovakia in a tense round of 16 affair that required extra time, which was only secured thanks to a Jude Bellingham wonder strike just as England were on the verge of being knocked out of the competition.

Should England be subjected to another tight clash in tonight’s game against Switzerland, penalties could be a real possibility.

Speaking on GB News, Shilton told Martin Daubney how he would approach a shoot-out.

“I don’t think Jordan Pickford needs any advice from me because he is pretty decent at shoot-outs, but it is a bit of a lottery”, he said.

“A lot of goalkeepers just guess and sometimes you get lucky. I used to try and wait as long as I could before I moved.

“A lot of times, the ball goes straight down the middle or they’ve mishit it and you’ve gone too early.

“It is a bit of a lottery. It’s obviously very challenging for the taker. I think these days they are better prepared, they do a lot of analysing before the game about their penalty takers and goalkeepers and mental attributes.

“A lot of players take a deep breath to settle themselves, we had none of that. I remember Bobby Robson said in the 1990 semi-final against Germany ‘who wants to take a penalty?’

“We didn’t plan them as much in those days.”

Southgate will be hoping England can emerge victorious without the need for a penalty shoot-out given the nation’s spurious record.

The former Middlesbrough boss has managed to address the spot kick hoodoo with two victories, coming against Colombia at the 2018 World Cup and tonight’s opponents, Switzerland, at the inaugural Nations League a year later.

Other than beating Spain at Euro 1996, England had lost six of their seven shootouts at major tournaments before Southgate’s side managed to turn the tide.

But the last time England competed in a shootout will bring painful memories for the Three Lions, losing to Italy in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.
