ANALYSIS: Sports reporter Ben McCaffrey rounds up the Carabao Cup action on an evening that saw no shocks

The Carabao Cup threw up no shocks on Wednesday night, with all Premier League clubs cruising to victory against lower-league opposition.

Eberechi Eze grabbed his first goal in Arsenal red, as they ran out 2-0 victors at Port Vale, and an overhead kick from Joao Palhinha guided Tottenham to a 3-0 victory against Doncaster Rovers.

Meanwhile in the north, Newcastle began their title defence in comfortable fashion, beating Bradford City 4-1, and two stunners from Phil Foden and Savinho saw Pep Guardiola’s side progress 2-0 against Huddersfield Town.

With that being said, here is a round-up of all the action on the night.

City cruise past the Terriers after Phil Foden thunderbolt

Manchester City sailed through to the third round courtesy of two fabulous efforts from Foden and Savinho.

The England midfielder has enjoyed a terrific return to the City side, starring in the 3-0 victory over local rivals Manchester United two weeks ago, and being favoured from the start against Arsenal by boss Pep Guardiola.

Foden continued his form through to the Carabao Cup, too, producing a strike worthy of winning any game.

He linked up with debutant striker Divine Mukasa before hammering the ball into the bottom corner from distance. No chance for Lee Nicholls in the Huddersfield net.

Savinho then doubled the lead for the visitors late on, smashing the ball off the crossbar and into the net from an awkward angle.

The Terriers have conceded at least three goals in their last three games against the Cityzens, including 5-0 and 6-1 results, so keeping the scoring to a minimum is a positive for the West Yorkshire side.

The Gunners continue to fire on all cylinders

A maiden Eberechi Eze goal was the major story for Arsenal, who cruised through to the next round against Port Vale.

It was a superb team effort, too. Gabriel Martinelli found Myles Lewis-Skelly through the middle of two defenders, whose awareness to see Eze’s run directly behind him almost defied physics.

The former Crystal Palace midfielder then allowed the ball to run across his body before coolly slotting it into the bottom corner. A truly slick move.

Leandro Trossard secured the victory with minutes to spare, smashing the ball into the bottom corner from distance.

The result could be deemed somewhat underwhelming after boss Mikel Arteta put out such a strong starting line-up, but a win is a win and Eze getting on the scoresheet will delight the gaffer.

Newcastle began their title defence comfortably, as they avoided being pecked by the chickens at St James’ Park.

Joelinton opened the scoring for the Magpies after he acted the fastest following Anthony Gordon’s deflected effort from the area.

William Osula doubled their lead, finishing with composure after a magical 30-yard pass to play him through from skipper Bruno Guimaraes.

And Joelinton then grabbed his second of the game; once again courtesy of brilliant vision from the captain Guimaraes, and once again finishing with composure into the bottom corner.

Osula also grabbed his brace to complete the rout, finishing at the back post after a superb Harvey Barnes delivery.

Bradford nicked a goal towards the end to give them hope of an unlikely comeback - a stunning strike off the crossbar from the edge of the area - but it was not meant to be.

Spurs completed the Premier League whitewash on the evening, putting Doncaster Rovers to the sword at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

A majestic Joao Palhinha overhead kick put the hosts ahead, while a Jay McGrath own goal secured Frank’s side’s place in the next round draw.

A deft Brennan Johnson chip from a brilliant Lucas Bergvall through ball secured the comfortable victory for the home side.

It was a night that saw former boss Ange Postecoglou put on a show away at Real Betis with Nottingham Forest in the Europa League, Spurs could not afford to mark the same night with a historic Carabao Cup defeat. They avoided this fate.
