There may be a damehood on the cards as well

Two Lionesses stars look set to secure MBEs in the forthcoming New Year Honours' list following their pivotal contributions to England's European Championship triumph.

Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton are anticipated to receive the gongs after their exceptional performances throughout the tournament.

Kelly delivered the championship-winning penalty against Spain, while Hampton's goalkeeping heroics included stopping two penalties during the decisive shootout in Switzerland on Sunday. Their recognition would address a notable omission from previous honours lists.

The Cabinet Office oversees the honours nomination process, with both players considered certain selections given their role in captivating the nation during England's successful campaign.

Kelly's impact proved transformative across multiple knockout matches. She entered as a substitute against Spain to set up Alessia Russo's equaliser before converting the winning penalty.

Her late intervention against Italy saw her net the decisive goal in stoppage time of extra time, capitalising on a penalty rebound. The Arsenal forward's influence began in the quarter-final against Sweden, where her immediate impact from the bench included creating Lucy Bronze's header with her opening touch.

She subsequently delivered the cross for Michelle Agyemang's equaliser before successfully converting in the penalty shootout. Hampton demonstrated remarkable composure between the posts, denying two Swedish penalties in addition to her heroics in the final shootout victory.

Previous honours distributions saw captain Leah Williamson receive an OBE, with Lucy Bronze, Beth Mead and Ellen White earning MBEs following the 2022 European victory. Stand-in skipper Millie Bright also gained an OBE, while Mary Earps and Lauren Hemp were awarded MBEs after the World Cup final appearance last year.

Kelly notably missed recognition in 2022, despite netting the extra-time winner against Germany at Wembley. Williamson's OBE could be elevated to a CBE, acknowledging her achievement as the first player to captain England to consecutive major trophies and the first to secure silverware abroad.

Manager Sarina Wiegman's honorary CBE may also be upgraded to an honorary damehood, recognising her remarkable success with the national team.
