Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham: Spurs fans sweating over Premier League status after defeat at Stamford Bridge

Tottenham Hotspur's battle to preserve their top-flight status will extend to the final weekend of the Premier League campaign following a 2-1 loss to Chelsea in a fiery London derby at Stamford Bridge.

Roberto De Zerbi's side travelled across the capital knowing a win would secure safety, but instead they return with their fate still uncertain heading into Sunday's decisive encounter with Everton.

Spurs maintain a two-point cushion over West Ham, who face Leeds on the same afternoon.

The north Londoners' vastly superior goal difference means a single point at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium should prove sufficient to avoid the drop.

The Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez broke the deadlock in the 18th minute, left with space to unleash a swerving effort from 20 yards that nestled into the top corner beyond goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.

Mathys Tel had struck the woodwork with a header earlier in the half as Spurs started brightly, but creativity proved elusive thereafter.

The visitors generated just 0.26 expected goals during the opening hour as the contest repeatedly threatened to spill over.

Chelsea extended their advantage in the 67th minute when Randal Kolo Muani's dreadful backpass was seized upon, allowing Andrey Santos to bundle the ball home from close range.

Richarlison offered Spurs a lifeline with 16 minutes remaining, converting Pape Matar Sarr's clever backheel from close range to reduce the deficit.

The visitors pushed for an equaliser but were left incensed by a controversial refereeing decision in the closing stages.

Marc Cucurella received a yellow card for hauling Micky van de Ven to the ground as Tottenham prepared to deliver a corner, yet no penalty was awarded.

Officials ruled the ball had not yet entered play, a decision that sparked furious protests from James Maddison and his teammates towards referee Stuart Attwell at the final whistle.

Despite a late surge, Spurs failed to create sufficient chances when the stakes demanded more, with their season-long struggles in attack proving costly once again.

De Zerbi's men now face a nerve-shredding final day at home, where their form has been poor throughout the campaign.

A draw against Sean Dyche's Everton would almost certainly guarantee survival given their goal difference advantage over the Hammers.

For Chelsea, the victory under interim boss Calum McFarlane lifts them into eighth position ahead of Brentford on goal difference, keeping Europa League qualification within reach.

The Blues travel to Sunderland on Sunday with European football still a realistic target.
