Goalkeeper’s future remains in question after stellar campaign

Wojciech Szczesny has discussed his future at Barcelona, insisting he is ‘not ashamed’ that his wife makes most of his decisions, including whether he is to stay at the Nou Camp next year.

Szscesny, 35, has already confirmed Barcelona offered him a two-year contract extension, but the Polish international is yet to accept it.

The goalkeeper started the season without a club after leaving Juventus where he made over 200 appearances.

Shortly after this, he announced his retirement from football. However, Barcelona came calling just one month later and Szczesny revoked his retirement decision in order to join the Catalan club.

Starting goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s nasty patella tendon injury in his right knee left him out of action for most of the season, meaning Barcelona had just one senior goalkeeper: Inaki Pena.

Despite initially being brought in as the back-up following his departure from Juventus last summer, Szczesny quickly impressed boss Hansi Flick and the former Arsenal goalkeeper has now made 29 appearances this season.

He even started ahead of Ter Stegan in Barcelona’s recent 4-3 La Liga victory over bitter rivals Real Madrid, despite the German being on the bench, in what represented one of their biggest games of the campaign so far.

When asked about his future, he told Canal Plus: “I don't know. I don't hide the fact that I received an offer of a two-year extension, but I have to decide with my family what's best for us.

“I think I owe it to my family, to my wife, to make these decisions together, so I just haven't made a decision yet.

“Most of the decisions regarding my home are made by my wife, and I’m not ashamed of that at all.”

Szczesny is married to Ukrainian stunner Marina Luczenko-Szczesna, who has a successful pop career.

The pair met while Szczesny played for Arsenal, with the duo getting married in 2016 and sharing two children named Liam and Noelia.

The veteran did admit that most of the football decisions are usually made by himself - but admitted that, when it comes to his future at Barcelona, he's leaving it in the hands of his inner circle.

“The football-related ones are mostly made by me, but this is such an unusual case, as we were determined to come here for a year to try to achieve our dreams, and then go back to playing golf," he added.

He continued: “I’ll decide in the coming weeks. There are also the logistical aspects of school, moving, and so on.

“For now, I’m enjoying what’s happened and not thinking about whether I’m going to stay here or not.”

Szczesny became visibly emotional on the pitch following their recent victory against Real Madrid, where he said: "After the final whistle today, it was really hard… my eyes filled with tears a little. It was a beautiful moment.”

However, if the 35-year-old would like to carry on in Barcelona, there is no doubt the club would like to keep him on board.

Barcelona have all-but confirmed the league title this season after their victory over Real Madrid, with the Catalan side seven points clear with three games remaining.

The trophy is coupled with their Copa Del Rey victory, also over Real Madrid, earlier in the year in what has proved to be a remarkable first season transformation under boss Flick.

The LaLiga titans have matches with Espanyol, Villarreal and Athletic Club still to play. They have won 26 of their 35 league matches this term, drawing four and losing five as they close in on a first league title since the days of Ernesto Valverde back in 2022.
