Arsenal's dreams of Champions League glory are over, with the north London giants losing 2-1 to PSG last night - and 3-1 on aggregate - as they failed to make the final.

Mikel Arteta's men had gone into the showdown daring to dream, despite losing 1-0 in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium last week.

Arsenal performed well in France, with the Gunners managing more shots and possession than Luis Enrique's team.

But they ultimately came up short, with Bukayo Saka's late goal not enough following efforts from PSG duo Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi.

The result means Arsenal's wait for Champions League glory goes on. They have never won the competition, with their last final appearance coming all the way back in 2006.

They do, however, have something to show for their efforts in Europe this term.

Arsenal have earned £12.7million for their exploits in Europe this term, with that sum set to go on new players for next season.

Arteta's men aren't too far away from winning a major trophy but it's patently clear they need a striker to go one step further.

Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, even when fully fit, aren't at the level required to win prize such as the Champions League and Premier League.

Mikel Merino, though he's performed well up top in their absence, isn't a proven No 9.

It's an open secret that Arsenal would love to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle. Given his importance to Eddie Howe's side, however, that will be easier said than done.

Viktor Gyokeres is also of interest but a number of teams, including Manchester United and Chelsea, admire the Sporting Lisbon star.

Arteta, meanwhile, has insisted that he felt Arsenal were the best team in the Champions League this season.

"I don't think there's been a better team in the competition from what I've seen," he said.

Arteta did, however, acknowledge that Arsenal failed to take their chances across the two matches.

"But we are out," he continued. "We deserved much more but this competition is about the boxes, the strikers most of the time and the goalkeeper and theirs was the best player in both games.

"I'm so proud of the boys, they deserve lots of credit for what they're doing and the amount of injuries.

"We arrived here in the worst state. You have to get here with everyone fit and available with lots of minutes.

"They had a week. We came here in a different context. That gives me a lot of positivity for the future."

PSG boss Luis Enrique, however, has made it clear he doesn't agree with that assessment.

“Mikel Arteta is a great friend, but I don’t agree at all,” Enrique said.

“They played in a clever way and they got the match to the right moment for them because they played in the way they wanted, and the way they love. But in the two legs we scored more than them and that is the most important thing in football.

“Arsenal played a great match, and we suffered, but we deserved to get to the final.

“They are a great team, but I repeat, we scored more goals, we played in a great way in the first leg, and the second half of the second leg was a different match, and we could have scored even more goals.”
