Former Arsenal footballer Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been sentenced to four years in prison for his role in a £600,000 cannabis smuggling operation.
The 34-year-old striker pleaded guilty last month to importing approximately 60kg of the class B drug from Thailand through Stansted Airport.
The father of two was arrested by National Crime Agency officers in September 2024 after Border Force officials discovered the cannabis concealed in suitcases.
Emmanuel-Thomas, who resided in Gourock, Scotland, had initially denied the charges before changing his plea at Chelmsford Crown Court in May.

The former professional footballer had spent eight months on remand awaiting sentencing.

"It is through your own actions you will no longer be known as a professional footballer," the judge stated. "You will be known as a criminal. A professional footballer who threw it all away."
The court heard that Border Force officers intercepted roughly 60kg of cannabis worth an estimated £600,000 in two suitcases arriving from Bangkok. The drugs had been vacuum-packed inside four pieces of luggage.
Emmanuel-Thomas had served as an intermediary between criminals in the UK and Thailand, orchestrating the smuggling attempt through his connections in the Southeast Asian country.
In a letter read to the court, Emmanuel-Thomas expressed profound remorse for his actions.
"This past year has been the most harmful and eye-opening of my life," he wrote. "At times it has been unbearable."
The footballer stated he "never imagined" he could find himself in such circumstances and "completely regrets but takes full responsibility" for his actions.

He revealed that witnessing his daughter visit him in prison proved particularly devastating.
"Watching her walk into the space broke me," he wrote. "I never wanted her to see me in that light."
His girlfriend, Yasmin Piotrowska, watched from the gallery as the sentence was delivered.
Emmanuel-Thomas's journey from prodigy to prisoner marks a spectacular fall from grace.
