The Reds were crushed at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday

Arne Slot is facing a fight to keep his job as Liverpool manager, with Manchester City cruising into the semi-finals of the FA Cup with an emphatic 4-0 victory over their rivals at the Etihad Stadium.

City went into the clash hoping to build on their impressive Carabao Cup win before the international break, with Pep Guardiola's men superior to Arsenal at Wembley.

And they did exactly that on Saturday, producing a sensational performance that now puts them just two victories away from yet another trophy.

Erling Haaland has, in recent months, started to look a shadow of his usual self.

The Norway international certainly hasn't been scoring at his usual rate but, against a Liverpool side clearly sacking confidence, that all changed.

His first goal came from 12 yards in the 39th minute, with the 25-year-old scoring from the penalty spot after Virgil van Dijk fouled Nico O'Reilly.

Just eight minutes later and the former Borussia Dortmund marksman was at it again.

With City starting to blow their opponents away, Haaland rose majestically to power home a fine header past Giorgi Mamardashvili after a wonderful cross from Antoine Semenyo.

At half-time, Liverpool fans were praying for a miracle.

But those calls went unanswered, with City instead extending their lead through Semenyo just five minutes after the restart.

Haaland, chasing a hat-trick, blasted home another from close range to complete his treble and fire City through to the last four.

While it was a sensational day for the hosts, however, it was yet another turbulent afternoon for Liverpool.

The reigning Premier League champions are in a crisis and were outplayed from the first minute to the last. Given their hopes of making the top four hang in the balance, and despite steering the Reds to the crown last term, Slot is undeniably a man under pressure.

Liverpool insist they will stick with the Dutchman but rumours linking Xabi Alonso to the post will only grow in volume. The Spaniard, who represented them as a player, is a free agent following his departure from Real Madrid earlier this season.

On social media, the reaction to the loss was brutal. Many called for Slot to be relieved of his duties, with one user saying: "This is now embarrassing. SACK Slot NOW."

A second opined: "@LiverpoolFC Please sack Arne Slot today. Even in America, we can feel the embarrassment."

Another said: "How can Slot have this job? Sack him."

A fourth raged: "How many times will the club be embarrassed like this before a change is made? Liverpool show no signs of improving under Slot. Sack him and make a push for a Champions League spot."

And a fifth hit out by saying: "@LFC pls enough is enough. Sack him today . We are tired … Sack Slot."

There were many bad performers for Liverpool on Saturday.

Mohamed Salah was the worst of the lot, with the veteran missing a penalty and spurning an early chance. Virgil van Dijk, another stalwart, wasn't much better.

But it's Slot who will have to answer questions on this debacle. Based on this evidence, his time at Anfield could soon be over.
