Williams team principal James Vowles has firmly rejected suggestions that the team's 2026 challenger is carrying excessive weight, maintaining that their absence from this week's Barcelona shakedown test stems from an ambitious development approach.
The Grove-based outfit acknowledged last Friday that they would miss the pre-season running at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, sparking widespread speculation about the FW48's readiness.
Vowles described the situation as "incredibly painful" during a media call on Wednesday, accepting this outcome was "clearly not been the plan".
However, he framed the decision as a calculated risk to enhance competitiveness, stating that the team was "aggressively pushing the limits of performance" as part of its broader transformation efforts.

The team principal confirmed that the FW48 has now successfully completed all required safety assessments.
A Williams spokesman previously told the Telegraph that a nosebox test remained outstanding, but Vowles claimed this hurdle has since been cleared.
He said: "I'm pleased to say that we've passed all necessary tests and we're ready to run Bahrain."

Vowles maintained the team possessed the capability to appear in Spain had they chosen to do so, but the compromises involved proved unacceptable.
He explained: "In terms of Barcelona, we could have made Barcelona testing, simple as that. We could have made it. But in doing so, I would have to turn upside down the impact on spares, components and updates across Bahrain, Melbourne and beyond."
Addressing the weight speculation directly, Vowles dismissed claims that the car was "miles" overweight whilst acknowledging some uncertainty remained.
He said: "There's no knowledge of the weight until we get to Bahrain. That's not avoiding the question, but you need to get all the sensor packs off to actually understand where we are."

He described the 768kg minimum weight target as "very aggressive" and suggested any potential excess would be marginal rather than substantial.
Vowles added: "I guess what I'm really indicating to you is that the numbers we're talking about are probably small enough that I need to see the car weighed in order for me to be able to assess where we are. So it's not miles over."
Rather than physical track running, Williams has utilised the Virtual Test Track simulation this week, putting the complete car through its paces on a stationary rig.
Vowles termed this programme "incredibly useful".

Despite their disappointment at missing the Barcelona running, drivers Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon have backed their team principal's approach.
Vowles said: "They stand shoulder to shoulder with me. They're clearly, as I am, disappointed. They're racing drivers. They want to be out there testing the car, and whilst they're in our driver-in-loop simulator, it isn't the same. But they also signed up to the journey, not of 12 months, but of a team which wants to fight back to the top."
Vowles expressed confidence that the six days of Bahrain testing, split across two sessions, would provide sufficient preparation for the Melbourne season opener.
The team also benefits from Mercedes supplying both power unit and gearbox, meaning insights gathered by their partner in Spain will transfer to Williams ahead of Bahrain.
