Lewis Hamilton will be hoping for a better second year at Ferrari

Martin Brundle has expressed astonishment that Ferrari did not alter Lewis Hamilton's engineering arrangements earlier in the seven-time world champion's tenure with the Scuderia.

Speaking at the 2026 Autosport Awards, the former Formula 1 driver and Sky Sports analyst remarked: "I'm surprised it probably didn't happen a bit earlier, really, judging by all the things that were going on last year."

The veteran broadcaster observed signs of tension between Hamilton and his race engineer Riccardo Adami throughout the 2025 campaign.

Brundle was unequivocal in his assessment, stating that "something needed to change" following what proved a difficult maiden season.

The Sky Sports commentator elaborated on the communication difficulties that plagued the partnership throughout the season.

"Lewis needs to go there with a team so that at least they understand 'Lewis speak' when he's inside the car, what it all means, and to interpret what Lewis really needs behind the wheel," Brundle explained.

He suggested that despite efforts to present matters favourably, the underlying problems were evident to observers.

"Just listening to the radio and watching the performance, although they obviously put a varnish on it through last season, something needed to change," the former driver added.

The Italian outfit has now confirmed that Adami will transition to a different position within the organisation.

Ferrari issued a statement expressing gratitude for his service: "Ferrari HP would like to thank Riccardo for his commitment and contribution to his trackside role and wishes him every success in his new position."

The team added that the appointment of Hamilton's permanent race engineer would be announced in due course.

For the forthcoming Barcelona testing sessions, Carlo Santi will assume the role on a temporary basis.

Reports have emerged suggesting the Maranello squad may be pursuing a former McLaren employee as the eventual permanent appointment.

Hamilton's inaugural campaign with Ferrari proved particularly challenging, with the British driver failing to secure a single grand prix podium throughout 2025, though he did claim a sprint race victory in China.

The move to Maranello came after twelve years with Mercedes, where Hamilton had worked alongside engineer Peter Bonnington, known as Bono, for the entirety of his tenure.

Bonnington has since taken on expanded responsibilities at the Brackley team, serving as Head of Trackside Performance whilst engineering rookie Kimi Antonelli.

The 2026 Formula 1 season commences with the Australian Grand Prix from 6-8 March, followed immediately by the Chinese Grand Prix.
