F1 winners and losers from 2023 including Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez

GB news is taking a look back at sport in 2023 with mixed fortunes in the world of F1.
Another F1 season is in the history books and GB News takes a look back at eventful year and how some of the drivers will likely perceive how they did.
Max Verstappen enjoyed a historic year as his 19 wins from 22 races broke all previous records on his way to a third world title.
Red Bull also wrapped up the triple achievement of having both their drivers finish in the top two and clinching the Constructors' Championship.
But it wasn't all plain sailing for Red Bull with Sergio Perez coming under intense scrutiny.
GB News picks out some winners and losers from the season with reasons given for each one.
Winner: Max Verstappen
No beating around the bush here, the biggest winner of them all has to be the man who was in a league of his own compared to everybody else.
His 19 wins from the 2023 season would put him 18th on the all-time list for Grand Prix winners - more than the likes of Stirling Moss, Jenson Button, Emerson Fittipaldi and David Coulthard achieved in their entire careers.
It was the ultimate season for the 26-year-old, who barely put a foot wrong all year and that was only magnified by the margin between himself and team-mate Sergio Perez.
He'll expect a tougher challenge next year, but this version of Verstappen will take some beating.

Loser: Sergio Perez
It was such a promising start to the year when he won in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan, but the Monaco Grand Prix weekend proved to be the point of no return for the Mexican.
Finishing with worse than half the points that Verstappen achieved in the same car that was seen as far superior to the rest of the field is not good enough.
That's what led to questions about Perez's future in the team as both Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso had a chance to catch the Red Bull driver in the final few races.
Red Bull have opted to give Perez at least one more year, but another campaign like the last and he will unlikely be getting a contract renewal.
Winner: Lewis Hamilton
There's only so much the Mercedes drivers could have done with their troublesome W14 in 2023 and Lewis Hamilton extracted everything he could out of it to finish as the best-of-the-rest.
He very nearly spoiled Red Bull's party by finishing above Sergio Perez in the standings, but the car let him down towards the end.
However, after a disappointing personal campaign in 2022 where he was beaten by his team-mate, Hamilton showed glimpses that he was back to his best and ready to fight.
Give him a car next year Mercedes and that record eighth title could be a very really possiblity.
Winner: Fernando Alonso
It's not too farfetched to claim this was arguably Alonso's best season in F1 since clinching the last of his two world titles.
At 42 years of age, Alonso is defying history by continuing to battle at the front of the grid and started the year with six podiums in eight races.
He had been left angry at Alpine over the way they handled his contract situation in 2022, but Alonso has had the last laugh after finishing fourth and above both Ferraris in the Drivers' Championship.
That drive to compete hasn't disappeared and he'll fancy his chances next year if Aston Martin manage to build a competitive car.

Loser: Nyck de Vries
Nyck de Vries' axing at AlphaTauri was seen as harsh by many, but he did little to win over his doubters.
Most rookies are given the benefit of the doubt and De Vries may point to Luke Sargeant's difficult year with Williams.
But losing your first permanent F1 seat after just 10 races will hurt deep and may just wreck any other chances he had of returning to the sport.
AlphaTauri and Red Bull have proven to be unforgiving in the past if they feel a change is needed and De Vries was their latest victim.
Oscar Piastri had one of the best rookie seasons in F1 history

Winner: Oscar Piastri
On the other side of the coin is McLaren star Oscar Piastri, who enjoyed one of the best rookie seasons in F1 history.
Comparing it to Lewis Hamilton's 2007 season is going a bit too far but there's no doubting F1 has found another superstar talent from Australia.
Lando Norris was pushed all the way by his new team-mate and faces a real battle on his hands to keep his spot as McLaren's No 1 driver next year.
But there will also be new expectations on Piastri's shoulders to kick on from his debut campaign. That's more a compliment to what he showed in 2023 than anything else though.
Toto Wolff will want big changes for next year
PA
Loser: Toto Wolff
Not a driver but Toto Wolff will not have been happy with Mercedes going winless in a season for the first time since 2011.
Red Bull and Verstappen's dominance was unlike anything anyone in F1 has ever seen but Mercedes played their part in not building a car capable of challenging.
There was genuine optimism heading into 2023 that they'd be closer than where they were the year prior.
But they arguably ended up further away with the team in need of a big revamp behind the scenes to make drastic changes for 2024.Wolff will want all hands on deck to make sure Mercedes don't have another winless year.
