James Wade let rip during his showdown with Peter Wright

Professional darts player James Wade found himself at the centre of an embarrassing moment during his match against Peter Wright at Players Championship 17 in Leicester earlier this week.

The world No 10 audibly broke wind during the televised encounter, causing an awkward interruption to play.

The incident occurred as Wade was securing a 6-5 victory over Wright in their quest to reach the quarter-finals.

Wright's uncomfortable laughter and step backwards from the oche made it clear that the flatulence had not gone unnoticed.

This marks the second time in under a year that Wade has been involved in such an incident during professional competition.

The moment became even more uncomfortable when referee Owen Binks announced: "Oh boy, OK then. This is a streamed match guys."

Wade had apparently been unaware that the match was being broadcast.

He claimed "It slipped out" before adding: "Give it a second." His opponent Wright appeared to think more time was needed to clear the air.

The 42-year-old attempted to move proceedings along, telling Wright: "Go ahead. Do you want nine more arrows?"

The match caller's intervention had clearly caught Wade off guard, turning what might have been a private moment into a public spectacle viewed by darts fans watching the stream.

Wade's previous flatulence incident occurred in September 2024, also during a Players Championship event. On that occasion, he attempted to explain away the noise as coming from his footwear.

Following the September incident, Wade took to social media to address the situation.

He wrote: "I feel I must address a situation following my run to the semi-finals of PC22 today. Footage has emerged of me doing what appears to be a 's***t' at the end of one of my matches."

He continued: "It was actually the Velcro on my new trainers. I now consider this matter put to bed as don't wish to talk about it again."

Despite Wade's attempt to close the matter with his shoe explanation last year, Tuesday's incident has reignited discussion about his on-court flatulence.

The Leicester match proved that his September statement about not wishing "to talk about it again" has become somewhat ironic.

His 6-5 victory over Wright may have secured his quarter-final place, but it's the unfortunate interruption that has captured attention once again.
