Ray Parlour had a hilarious response to the crowd at Alexandra Palace after being branded “boring” by spectators at the World Darts Championship - with the Arsenal icon promptly restoring order in the most British way imaginable: by downing a pint at speed.

The former Gunners star was among thousands packed into Ally Pally on Friday for the closing matches of the first round of the World Darts Championship.

Parlour, 52, was quickly clocked by supporters, his unmistakable grin flashing across the big screens as chants rolled down from the stands.

Nicknamed the “Romford Pele” during his playing days, Parlour initially played the role of polite observer.

Holding two plastic cups aloft, he acknowledged the crowd’s attention with a smile and a restrained sip, before sitting back down.

It was a decision that did not go unpunished, though. Almost instantly, the mood shifted and chants of “boring, boring, Parlour” echoed around the north London venue.

At Ally Pally, restraint is rarely forgiven. The unspoken code between crowd and celebrity is simple: if you’re spotted, you perform. Ideally with alcohol.

Parlour appeared to recognise the error of his ways.

Moments later, he was back on his feet, pint in hand, and this time there would be no half measures.

In footage later shared on social media, the former England international drains the full pint in roughly 12 seconds, sparking a thunderous roar of approval.

Balance restored, he returned to his seat, reputation intact, to watch the rest of the action unfold on the oche.

It was a scene that neatly captured the peculiar charm of the darts, where sporting drama and pub culture collide.

The championship has long been a festive pilgrimage for fans, many of whom treat the tournament as an endurance event of their own.

It is estimated that as many as 750,000 pints are consumed across the competition at Alexandra Palace. Even more, no doubt, are sunk on the journey there.

Parlour is far from the only familiar face to be swept up in the carnival this year.

Former Premier League striker Peter Crouch drew cheers of his own earlier in the week by sinking a pint before balancing the empty cup on his head, while ex-midfielder Steve Sidwell was also spotted soaking up the atmosphere.

Away from football, Lionesses captain Leah Williamson and UFC lightweight star Paddy Pimblett have both been seen enjoying the occasion as well.

For Parlour, the reception was perhaps unsurprising.

He made more than 450 appearances for Arsenal, winning three Premier League titles.

Plenty of Gunners supporters inside the arena would have been delighted to see an old favourite embrace the spirit of the occasion.
